Key Responsibilities
The Aviation Unit Pilot will be entrusted with a comprehensive range of duties, ensuring the highest standards of safety and operational excellence. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Operating rotary-wing aircraft safely and proficiently, adhering strictly to Transport Canada regulations, YRP policies and procedures, and all relevant aircraft flight manuals.
- Accurately filing flight plans with air traffic control and securing necessary flight clearances.
- Proactively monitoring complex weather patterns using advanced aviation weather programs to ensure flight safety and operational readiness.
- Maintaining clear and effective communication with Air Traffic Control, other aircraft, and the Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) to facilitate seamless flight operations.
- Conducting thorough pre-flight and post-flight inspections, including comprehensive walk-around checks, fuel assessments, and equipment verification to ensure aircraft airworthiness.
- Exercising superior situational awareness of the flight environment, including terrain, navigation, communication, weather conditions, and the location of other aircraft.
- Collaborating effectively with the Lead Aircraft Maintenance Engineer to uphold and enhance safe aircraft operational practices and maintenance standards.
- Assisting the Aviation Services Unit (ASU) Supervisor and Lead Pilot in critical areas such as pilot hiring, performance assessment, training new pilots, and overall flight operations management, including budget forecasting.
- Mentoring and coaching new pilots, contributing to their professional development and ensuring adherence to operational standards.
- Maintaining meticulous personal flight records and comprehensive aircraft logbooks.
- Accurately reporting flight and duty times to the Lead Pilot.
- Delivering clear and concise safety briefings, potentially involving technical information, to police members and other relevant personnel.
- Coordinating flight crew schedules to optimize operational efficiency and resource allocation.
- Actioning and distributing accident, incident, and other occurrence reports as required, ensuring timely and accurate documentation.
- Upholding strict confidentiality of all sensitive operational and organizational information.
- Assuming any responsibility delegated by the Lead Pilot or the ASU Supervisor, demonstrating adaptability and a commitment to team success.
Qualifications & Certifications
Candidates must possess the following essential qualifications and certifications:
- A valid Transport Canada Commercial Pilot License (Helicopter).
- A current Transport Canada Category One (1) Medical Certificate.
- A Restricted Radio Telephone Operator’s Certificate.
Mandatory Experience
Applicants are required to demonstrate significant and verifiable experience in rotary-wing aviation:
- A minimum of five (5) years of progressive flight experience, accumulating at least 1,000 hours of total flying time on rotary-wing aircraft. This must include a minimum of 100 hours as Pilot in Command (PIC).
- A minimum of 100 hours of documented night flying experience.
- A clean flight safety record with no violations or insured losses within the preceding five (5) years.
Preferred Experience
While not mandatory, candidates possessing the following experience will be highly regarded and competitive:
- At least 100 hours of pilot-in-command time on an Airbus H125 aircraft within the last 12 months.
- A minimum of 250 hours of flying time on turbine-engine rotary aircraft.
