Job Description
Flight Attendant
United Airlines currently employs over 28,000 active flight attendants, operating as the world's largest airline with an expansive and rapidly growing network. This coveted position offers the unique privilege of experiencing the world while working. United provides comprehensive training, eliminating the need for prior specialized schooling or a college degree.
The United Flight Attendant journey commences with industry-leading training. A rigorous 6.5-week Initial Training program in Houston, TX, focuses on United's stringent safety and service standards. Upon successful completion, trainees are assigned to one of United's seven major hubs: Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, or Washington Dulles, or other designated flight attendant base locations. Relocation assistance is not provided. Following base orientation, new hires are officially welcomed as full-time United employees.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Starting hourly flight pay of $28.88, with potential to reach $67.11 per hour based on seniority.

Qualifications and Requirements
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
- Minimum age of 21 years at the time of application.
- High school diploma or GED required; two or more years of college education preferred.
- At least one year of customer service experience in the service industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food service, education, aviation, social services).
- Clear, concise, and organized verbal communication skills, with the ability to speak loudly enough to be heard in emergency situations.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken. Proficiency in a second language is highly desirable.
- Second language fluency in languages such as Arabic, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Tagalog is a significant asset.
- Ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
- Effective communication skills in high-stress scenarios, including aircraft evacuation, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather, and turbulence.
- Professional appearance, impeccable grooming standards, and adherence to uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines.
- Tattoo Policy: Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, fingers, or neck. Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet are permitted, provided they are not larger than a credit card/employee badge (3.5 inches long x 2.24 inches wide) and are not offensive in nature (violent, obscene, sexual, racist, or containing objectionable content or imagery including weapons). Tattoos exceeding these dimensions or in prohibited areas must be covered by standard uniform pieces.
- Decorative covers, adornments, or jewelry on teeth or in the mouth are prohibited.
- Proficiency in operating electronic devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops) for task completion.
- Must possess a valid U.S. passport book or foreign passport book with at least 18 months of validity remaining at the time of application. Holding a recently applied-for passport is not sufficient; a passport must be in possession prior to starting training.
- Eligibility to travel globally without restrictions to all countries served by United.
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (up to overhead bins or assisting with window exits), and push/pull a beverage cart (up to 250 lbs.).
- Successful completion of a functional reach assessment (76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach and hold simultaneously, without shoes) to operate necessary equipment.
- Ability to sit in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
- Willingness to serve and/or sell food and beverages, including alcohol, in a diligent and professional manner.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule, supporting United's 24/7 operations, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Onboarding and Training Requirements:
- Successful completion of a water evacuation drill during training.
- Willingness to undergo pre-employment DOT drug screening, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
- Ability to pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens. Medical and recreational marijuana use is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the role.
- Successful completion of a 10-year background check, including criminal history, ensuring no travel restrictions to any United destinations. For instance, Canada has strict inadmissibility laws regarding DWI/DUI offenses; applicants with such convictions within the last 10 years may require a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) to travel to Canada for work.
- Must meet Federal Aviation Administration and United Airlines hearing and vision requirements, including specific audiometric standards and corrected vision of 20/40 or better for both near and far sight.
