Job Description

As a Flight Attendant with United Airlines, individuals become part of the world's largest airline, renowned for its most expansive network and rapid growth. This highly sought-after position offers the unique advantage of experiencing global destinations while performing professional duties. United provides comprehensive, industry-leading training, eliminating the need for specialized prior schooling or a college degree.

The journey begins with a rigorous 6.5-week Initial Training program in Houston, TX, focusing on United's stringent safety and service standards. Upon successful completion, trainees are assigned to one of United's seven major hubs: Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, or Washington Dulles. Following base orientation, new hires are welcomed as full-time employees. During training, United offers a stipend of $140 per week, dual-occupancy hotel accommodations, and two meals daily.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
  • High school graduate or GED required; two or more years of college education preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of customer service experience in the service industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food service, education, aviation, social services).
  • Must possess clear, concise, and audible communication skills, especially in emergency situations.
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written. Proficiency in a second language is highly desirable.
  • Second language fluency in Arabic, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, or Tagalog is a significant asset.
  • Ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
  • Effective communication skills during high-stress situations such as evacuations, security threats, medical emergencies, severe weather, and turbulence.
  • Professional appearance, adherence to grooming standards, and willingness to comply with uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, fingers, or neck and must not be offensive in nature. Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet must be no larger than a credit card and not offensive. Decorative covers or jewelry on teeth or in the mouth are not permitted.
  • Proficient in the use of electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops).
  • Must possess a valid U.S. passport book or a valid foreign passport book with applicable visas, allowing global travel without restrictions. The passport must have at least 18 months of remaining validity at the time of application.
  • Ability to travel to and from all countries served by United without restrictions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (e.g., luggage to overhead bins), and push/pull beverage carts (up to 250 lbs.).
  • Ability to pass a functional reach assessment (76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach and hold simultaneously, without shoes).
  • Ability to sit in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
  • Willingness to serve and/or sell food and beverages, including alcohol, in a diligent and professional manner.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule supporting United's 24/7 operations, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays on scheduled or reserve days.

Onboarding and Training

  • Successful completion of a water evacuation drill during training is mandatory.
  • Must be willing to undergo pre-employment DOT drug screening, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
  • Must pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens. Medical and recreational marijuana use is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the role.
  • Must pass a 10-year background check, including criminal history. Background must permit travel to all United destinations; for example, DWI/DUI charges within the last 10 years may impact admissibility to Canada without a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP).
  • Must meet hearing and vision requirements as established by the FAA and United Airlines, including specific audiometry and corrected vision standards (20/40 or better).
