Job Description
As a Flight Attendant at United Airlines, an individual will contribute to the operations of the world's largest airline, known for its most extensive global network and rapid expansion. With over 28,000 active flight attendants, this role provides a unique opportunity to explore the world while building a fulfilling career. United Airlines provides comprehensive training, eliminating the need for specialized prior schooling or a college degree.
The journey begins with an industry-leading 6.5-week Initial Training program in Houston, TX, focusing on United's rigorous safety and service standards. Upon successful completion, trainees are assigned to one of seven major hubs: Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, or Washington Dulles. Relocation assistance is not provided. Following base orientation, graduates are welcomed as full-time employees. During training, participants receive a stipend of $140 per week, along with dual occupancy hotel accommodations and provided meals.

Qualifications and Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED; a minimum of two years of college education is preferred.
- Minimum of one year of customer service experience in the service industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food service, education, aviation, social services).
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and audibly, particularly in emergency situations.
- Fluent in English, including speaking, reading, and writing. Proficiency in a second language is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in languages such as Arabic, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, or Tagalog is an asset.
- Ability to perceive all types and ranges of sound.
- Effective communication skills are essential for managing high-stress scenarios, including evacuations, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather, and turbulence.
- Maintain a professional appearance and adhere to grooming standards, including uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, fingers, or neck; visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet must not exceed specific size limitations and must not be offensive in nature. Decorative mouth jewelry is not permitted.
- Proficiently operate electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops) for task completion.
- Must possess a valid U.S. passport book or a valid foreign passport book with applicable visas, holding at least 18 months of remaining validity at the time of application. Passport applications or pending renewals are insufficient.
- Ability to travel globally without restrictions, entering and exiting countries as a working crew member.
- Ability to perform physical tasks including standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting heavy objects (up to overhead bins or window exits), and pushing/pulling beverage carts (up to 250 lbs).
- Successfully pass a functional reach assessment (76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach and hold).
- Ability to sit in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
- Willingness to serve and/or sell food and beverages, including alcohol, in a diligent and professional manner.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be available to work a flexible schedule supporting United's 24/7 operations, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
- Successful completion of a water evacuation drill during training is mandatory.
- Must pass pre-employment DOT drug screening, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
- Ability to pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens; medical and recreational marijuana are prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the role.
- Must pass a 10-year background check; criminal history must not impede global travel (e.g., DWI/DUI convictions may restrict entry into certain countries like Canada without appropriate permits).
- Meet Federal Aviation Administration and United Airlines hearing and vision requirements (e.g., hearing loss average not exceeding 40 dB at specified frequencies; each eye 20/40 or better corrected).
