United Airlines Flight Attendant Role Overview
United Airlines, the world's largest airline with an unparalleled network, is experiencing significant growth, creating a high demand for its Flight Attendant positions. United Airlines offers comprehensive, industry-leading training, eliminating the need for prior specialized schooling or a college degree.
The journey begins with an intensive 6.5-week Initial Training program in Houston, TX, focusing on United's rigorous safety and service standards. Upon successful completion, trainees are assigned to one of United's seven hub bases: Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, or Washington Dulles, with relocation funds not provided. Following base orientation, new Flight Attendants officially join United as full-time employees. During training, United provides a weekly stipend of $140, shared hotel accommodations, and daily meals.

Qualifications and Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application.
- High school graduate or GED required; a minimum of two years of college education is preferred.
- A minimum of one year of customer service experience within the service industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food service, education, aviation, social services).
- Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak loudly and clearly in emergency situations.
- Fluency in English, encompassing speaking, reading, writing, and understanding. Proficiency in a second language is highly desirable, with fluency in languages such as Arabic, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Tagalog being a significant asset.
- Ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
- Effective communication skills during high-stress situations, including aircraft evacuations, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather, and turbulence.
- Professional appearance and grooming standards, adhering to uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, fingers, or neck. Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet are permitted if they are not larger than a credit card and are not offensive in nature. Decorative dental adornments are not permitted.
- Proficiency in operating electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops) for task completion.
- Must possess a valid U.S. passport book or a valid foreign passport book with applicable visas, possessing at least 18 months of validity remaining at the time of application. Eligibility to travel globally without restrictions is mandatory.
- Ability to travel to and from all countries served by United Airlines without restriction. Applicants are responsible for verifying travel eligibility.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (e.g., luggage to overhead bins), and push/pull beverage carts up to 250 lbs.
- Successful completion of a functional reach assessment, including a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach and hold (simultaneous), without shoes.
- Ability to sit in an assigned jump seat with a fastened seatbelt and shoulder harness.
- Willingness to serve and/or sell food and beverages, including alcohol, in a diligent and professional manner.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule in support of United's 24/7 operations, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Onboarding and Training
- Successful completion of an in-water evacuation drill during training is required.
- Must pass pre-employment DOT drug screening, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
- Must pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens. Medical and recreational marijuana use is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the role.
- Must pass a 10-year background check, including criminal history. Background must not impede international travel. Please note specific restrictions for travel to Canada regarding DWI/DUI charges.
- Must meet Federal Aviation Administration and United Airlines hearing and vision requirements, including specific audiometry results and corrected vision of 20/40 or better for both far and near vision.
Compensation and Benefits
- Competitive starting hourly pay of $28.88, with potential to reach $67.11 per hour based on seniority.
