Role Overview: Flight Attendant

As one of the largest airlines globally with a rapidly expanding network, United Airlines employs over 28,000 dedicated flight attendants. This highly sought-after role provides the unique advantage of global travel while working. United provides comprehensive training, eliminating the need for specialized prior education or a college degree. The journey begins with an intensive 6.5-week Flight Attendant training program in Houston, Texas, covering United's stringent safety and service standards. Upon successful completion, trainees are assigned to one of seven major hubs (Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles) or other designated bases, with no relocation assistance provided. Following base orientation, new hires are welcomed as full-time employees. During the initial training period, trainees receive a stipend of $140 per week, with provided dual-occupancy hotel accommodations and daily meals.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED; 2 or more years of college education are preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of customer service experience in sectors such as retail, hospitality, food service, education, aviation, or social services.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and audibly, especially in emergency situations.
  • Fluency in English (speaking, reading, writing, and understanding).
  • Fluency in Italian (speaking, reading, writing, and understanding).
  • Ability to perceive all types and ranges of sound.
  • Capacity to communicate effectively during high-stress scenarios, including evacuations, security threats, medical emergencies, severe weather, and turbulence.
  • Professional appearance and adherence to grooming standards, including uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos on the head, hands, or neck are prohibited. Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, or feet must not exceed specific dimensions and must not be offensive in nature. Decorative dental adornments are not permitted.
  • Proficiency in using electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops) for work-related tasks.
  • Must possess a valid passport with at least 18 months of remaining validity at the time of application. Immediate possession of a valid passport book is required; applications or pending renewals are not sufficient.
  • Eligibility for unrestricted global travel to all countries served by United Airlines.
  • Ability to perform physical requirements including standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting heavy objects (up to overhead bins or emergency exits), and pushing/pulling a beverage cart up to 250 lbs.
  • Successful completion of a functional reach assessment (76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach/hold simultaneously, without shoes).
  • Ability to sit securely in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
  • Willingness to serve and/or sell food and beverages, including alcohol, in a diligent and professional manner.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Commitment to a flexible work schedule supporting United's 24/7 operations, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

Onboarding and Training Requirements

  • Successful completion of a water evacuation drill during training.
  • Willingness to undergo pre-employment DOT drug screening, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
  • Passage of DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens. Medical and recreational marijuana use is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the role.
  • Successful completion of a 10-year background check, ensuring no criminal history that would prohibit travel to any United destination (e.g., strict inadmissibility for DWI/DUI charges into Canada without a Temporary Resident Permit).
  • Meeting Federal Aviation Administration and United Airlines hearing and vision requirements (e.g., average hearing loss not exceeding 40 dB in the better ear at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz; each eye 20/40 or better corrected vision for far and near).
