The Role: Flight Attendant

United Airlines, a leader in global aviation and experiencing unprecedented growth, seeks dedicated individuals to join its esteemed team of over 28,000 flight attendants. This highly sought-after position offers the chance to travel the world without the necessity of a college degree or specialized schooling, as United provides comprehensive, industry-leading training.

Training and Onboarding

The journey begins with a rigorous 6.5-week Initial Training program at United's Houston, TX facility. Trainees will immerse themselves in United's stringent safety and service standards. Upon successful completion, trainees will be assigned to one of seven major hub bases: Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, or Washington Dulles. Relocation assistance is not provided. Following base orientation, new flight attendants are officially welcomed as full-time United employees.

During training, United provides a stipend of $140 per week, including dual occupancy hotel accommodations and daily meals.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
  • High school graduate or GED; two or more years of college education is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of customer service experience in the service industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food, education, aviation, social services).
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and audibly, especially in emergency situations.
  • Fluent in English (speaking, reading, writing, and understanding).
  • Must be fluent in German (speaking, reading, writing, and understanding).
  • Ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
  • Proficient communication skills during high-stress situations such as evacuations, security threats, medical emergencies, and severe weather.
  • Professional appearance and adherence to strict grooming, uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos on the head, hands, or neck are prohibited. Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet must not exceed credit card size and must be non-offensive. Decorative dental adornments are not permitted.
  • Proficiency in operating electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops) for task completion.
  • Must possess a valid U.S. passport book or foreign passport book with at least 18 months of remaining validity at the time of application and be eligible for unrestricted global travel.
  • Ability to travel to and from all countries served by United without restriction. Applicants are responsible for verifying travel eligibility.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting heavy objects (up to overhead bins or exit windows), and pushing/pulling beverage carts (up to 250 lbs.).
  • Successful completion of a functional reach assessment (76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach).
  • Ability to sit securely in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
  • Willingness to serve and sell food and beverages, including alcohol, professionally.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Willing and able to work a flexible schedule supporting United's 24/7 operation, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must successfully complete an in-water evacuation drill during training.
  • Must be willing to complete pre-employment DOT drug screens, background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
  • Ability to pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens; medical and recreational marijuana are prohibited.
  • Must pass a 10-year background check; background must not prohibit global travel (e.g., DWI/DUI convictions may affect entry into certain countries like Canada without a Temporary Resident Permit).
  • Meet FAA and United Airlines hearing and vision requirements, including specific audiometric levels and corrected vision of 20/40 or better.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Starting hourly flight pay of $28.88/hour, with potential to reach $67.11/hour based on seniority.
  • Additional compensation is available for language skills, lead positions, and international trips.
  • This role is eligible for bonuses, including profit sharing.
