Position Overview

As a Flight Attendant at United Airlines, individuals will become part of a dynamic team of over 28,000 professionals. United Airlines operates as the largest airline globally, boasting the most expansive network and experiencing unprecedented growth. The role provides a unique chance to experience the world while undertaking professional duties, making it a highly sought-after position. United Airlines provides comprehensive training, eliminating the need for prior specialized schooling or a college degree for this role.

The journey begins with industry-leading Flight Attendant training, a 6.5-week intensive program conducted in Houston, TX. This training focuses on United's stringent safety and service standards. Upon successful completion, trainees are assigned to one of seven major hubs: Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, or Washington Dulles, or other designated flight attendant bases. Relocation assistance is not provided. Following training and base orientation, successful candidates are welcomed as full-time United employees. During the initial training period, participants receive a stipend of $140 per week, complimentary dual occupancy hotel accommodations, breakfast, and either lunch or dinner, depending on the training schedule.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
  • High school graduate or GED required; two or more years of college coursework preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of customer service experience within the service industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food service, education, aviation, social services).
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and audibly, especially in emergency situations.
  • Fluent in English, including speaking, reading, writing, and understanding.
  • Fluent in German, including speaking, reading, and understanding.
  • Ability to perceive all types and ranges of sound.
  • Effective communication skills during high-stress situations, including aircraft evacuations, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather, and turbulence.
  • Professional appearance and adherence to grooming standards, including uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, or neck. Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet must be no larger than a credit card (3.5 inches long x 2.24 inches wide) or must be covered by standard uniform pieces, and must not be offensive in nature.
  • No decorative covers, adornments, or jewelry permitted on teeth or in the mouth.
  • Proficiency in operating electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops) for task completion.
  • Must possess a valid U.S. passport book or foreign passport book with applicable visas, exhibiting no restrictions on global travel, with at least 18 months of remaining validity at the time of application. Having applied for or awaiting renewal of a passport is insufficient.
  • Ability to travel to and from all countries served by United without restriction.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (up to overhead bins or exit windows), and push/pull beverage carts (up to 250 lbs).
  • Ability to pass a functional reach assessment (76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach and hold simultaneously, without shoes).
  • Ability to sit in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
  • Willingness to serve and/or sell food and beverages, including alcohol, professionally.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule supporting United's 24/7 operations, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must successfully complete an in-water evacuation drill during training.
  • Must be willing to undergo pre-employment DOT drug screening, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
  • Must pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens; medical and recreational marijuana are prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the role.
  • Must pass a 10-year background check, ensuring no travel restrictions to any United destinations (e.g., DWI/DUI convictions may impact travel to Canada).
  • Must meet Federal Aviation Administration and United Airlines hearing and vision requirements (e.g., hearing loss average not exceeding 40 dB in the better ear at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz; each eye 20/40 or better corrected for far and near vision).

Compensation and Benefits

United Airlines offers a competitive compensation package, including an attractive starting hourly pay of $28.88, with the potential to reach $67.11 per hour based on seniority. Additional compensation is available for language skills, lead positions, and international trips.

During training, a stipend of $140 per week is provided, along with accommodations and two meals daily. Upon successful graduation from training, employees will receive a $1,000 bonus. This position is also bonus eligible, including profit sharing.
