Training and Onboarding
The journey begins with United's industry-leading Flight Attendant training, a comprehensive 6.5-week program in Houston, TX, focusing on United's safety and service standards. Upon successful completion, trainees will attend base orientation in their assigned hub. During training, a stipend of $140 per week is provided, along with dual occupancy hotel accommodations and two meals daily. A $1,000 bonus is awarded upon successful graduation from training. Relocation funds are not provided for base assignments.
All candidates must successfully complete an evacuation drill in water during training, along with pre-employment DOT drug screens, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests. A 10-year background check is mandatory, ensuring no restrictions for travel to all countries served by United. Fluency in German is also a requirement for this role. Medical and recreational marijuana use is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the position.
Qualifications and Requirements
Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
High school graduate or GED required; 2 or more years of college preferred.
A minimum of one year of customer service experience in the service industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food, education, aviation, social service).
Ability to speak clearly, concisely, and loudly enough to be heard in emergencies.
Fluent in English (speaking, reading, writing, and understanding).
Fluent in German (speaking, reading, writing, and understanding).
Ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
Effective communication skills in high-stress situations.
Professional appearance and adherence to grooming, uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, or neck. Visible tattoos must be no larger than a credit card and must not be offensive.
No decorative covers, adornments, or jewelry on teeth or in the mouth.
Proficiency in operating electronic devices.
Must possess a valid U.S. passport book or foreign passport book with at least 18 months of remaining validity at the time of application and eligibility to travel globally without restrictions.
Ability to travel to and from all countries United serves without restrictions.
Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects, and push/pull a beverage cart (up to 250 lbs.).
Ability to pass a functional reach assessment (76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach and hold).
Ability to sit in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
Willingness and ability to serve and/or sell food and beverages, including alcohol.
Legally authorized to work in the United States.
Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays, to support United's 24/7 operation.
Must meet Federal Aviation Administration and United Airlines hearing and vision requirements (e.g., each eye 20/40 or better corrected, hearing loss not exceeding 40 dB averaged at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz).
