Today, United Airlines boasts over 28,000 active flight attendants and holds the position of the world's largest airline with the most expansive network, experiencing significant growth. The unique opportunity to see the world while working makes flight attendant positions highly sought after. Special schooling or a college degree is not a prerequisite for this role, as successful candidates will receive comprehensive training provided by United.

The journey begins with industry-leading Flight Attendant training. Trainees will spend 6.5 weeks attending Initial Training in Houston, TX, where they will master United's safety and service standards. During this period, a base location will be assigned from one of the seven hubs (Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles) or other flight attendant base locations (relocation funds are not provided). Upon successful completion of training and base orientation, individuals are welcomed as full-time United employees. A stipend of $140 per week, along with dual occupancy hotel accommodations, breakfast, and either lunch or dinner, is provided during training.

Inflight Crew Member Responsibilities & Proficiencies:

  • Safety First: Ensure the highest levels of safety for all passengers and crew.

  • Flexibility: Be available for global assignments 24/7, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours, supporting the comprehensive route network. Fulfill reserve assignments on short notice and be prepared to be away from base for multiple days at a time.
  • Dependability and Timeliness: Exhibit critical dependability and timeliness to ensure smooth operations and meet customer expectations.
  • Team Player: Possess a consistent track record of working effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
  • High school graduate or GED required; 2 or more years of college preferred.
  • Must have at least one year of customer service experience in a service industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food, teaching/education, aviation, social service).
  • Must be able to speak clearly, concisely, and loudly enough to be heard in an emergency.
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write Hebrew fluently is required.
  • Ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
  • Effectively communicate during high-stress situations such as aircraft evacuation, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather, and turbulence.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and excellent grooming standards, adhering to uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines.
    • Tattoos are NOT permitted on the head, hands, or neck, including behind the ear.
    • Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet are permitted if no larger than a credit card / employee badge (3.5 x 2.24 inches) or if covered by standard uniform pieces.
    • Visible tattoos must not be offensive (including but not limited to violent, obscene, sexual, racist content or imagery including weapons).
  • Decorative covers, adornments, and/or jewelry on teeth or in the mouth are not permitted.
  • Ability to proficiently operate electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) for required tasks.
  • Must possess a valid passport prior to application with at least 18 months of remaining validity.
  • Current physical possession of a valid U.S. passport book or foreign passport book with applicable visas is required for eligibility to travel globally without restrictions.
  • Ability to travel to and from all countries United serves without restrictions as a working crew member.
  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (such as luggage to overhead bin or window exit), and push and pull a beverage cart (up to 250 lbs.).
  • Ability to pass a functional reach assessment with a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach and hold (simultaneous), without shoes, to operate necessary equipment and doors.
  • Ability to sit in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
  • Required to serve and/or sell food and beverages (including alcohol) diligently and professionally.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule supporting United’s 24/7 operation (including weekdays, weekends, holidays, etc.).

Onboarding and Training Expectations:

  • Flight attendant trainees must successfully complete a water evacuation drill (pool) during training.
  • Must be willing to complete pre-employment DOT drug screen, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
  • Must pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens. Medical and recreational marijuana use is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the position.
  • Must pass a 10-year background check, including criminal history. The background check must not prohibit travel to or from any destination United flies.
  • Must, with or without reasonable accommodation, meet FAA and United Airlines hearing and vision requirements (e.g., hearing loss not exceeding 40 dB average in the better ear; corrected vision of 20/40 or better for far and near).

Compensation and Benefits:

United offers employees a competitive compensation package, including competitive pay, exceptional benefits, and travel privileges. The starting hourly flight pay is $28.88, with the top of base scale reaching $67.11 per hour. Pay increases are seniority-based, with additional compensation available for language skills, lead positions, and international trips. Competitive benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k), vacation, and sick time. Flight privileges allow employees, their family, and friends to fly anywhere in the world on a stand-by status. During training, a $140/week stipend is provided along with accommodations and two meals daily. Successful training graduates will receive a $1,000 bonus.
