Key Responsibilities
A Flight Attendant is primarily responsible for passenger safety and well-being. Duties include:
- Ensuring the highest levels of safety are maintained throughout the flight.
- Adapting and responding effectively to various customer-facing scenarios with optimism, positivity, and a "People-First" demeanor.
- Engaging directly with customers through outstanding interpersonal skills and good judgment.
- Resolving issues with understanding, compassion, and grace, influencing customer loyalty through excellent service.
- Being available for global assignments 24/7, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours.
- Fulfilling reserve assignments on short notice and being prepared to be away from base for multiple days.
- Demonstrating unwavering dependability and timeliness crucial for operational success and meeting customer expectations.
- Working effectively both independently and as a vital part of a collaborative team.
- Serving and/or selling food and beverages, including alcohol, in a diligent and professional manner.
- Creating memorable travel experiences for customers on every flight.
Training and Onboarding
A successful candidate's United journey begins with industry-leading Flight Attendant training. This intensive program spans 6.5 weeks and is conducted in Houston, TX. Trainees will master United’s safety and service standards. Upon successful completion of training, candidates will be assigned a base location at one of United’s hubs in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles, or other flight attendant base locations (relocation funds are not provided). Training graduates will receive a $1,000 bonus. During training, trainees receive a stipend of $140 per week, along with dual occupancy hotel accommodations and two meals per day (breakfast and either lunch or dinner based on the schedule).
Qualifications and Requirements
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED; two or more years of college are preferred.
- Have at least one year of customer service experience in a service industry such as retail, hospitality, food service, teaching/education, aviation, or social service.
- Ability to speak in a clear, concise, and organized manner, with sufficient volume to be heard in an emergency.
- Must be fluent in spoken, written, and understood English.
- Must be fluent in spoken and read Greek.
- Ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
- Ability to communicate effectively in high-stress situations such as aircraft evacuation, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather, and turbulence.
- Maintain a professional appearance and adhere to excellent grooming standards, including following strict uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, or neck (including behind the ear). Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet are permitted but may not exceed the size of a credit card/employee badge (3.5 x 2.24 inches) unless covered by standard uniform pieces. Visible tattoos must not contain offensive content (violent, obscene, sexual, racist, objectionable content, or imagery with weapons).
- Decorative covers, adornments, or jewelry on teeth or in the mouth are not permitted.
- Ability to proficiently operate electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) for required tasks.
- Must possess a valid passport book prior to application with at least 18 months of remaining validity. Physical possession of a valid U.S. or foreign passport with applicable visas is required to travel globally without restrictions. A pending passport application is not sufficient.
- Ability to travel to and from all countries United serves without any restrictions, able to enter and exit as a working crew member.
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (such as luggage to overhead bins or window exits), and push and pull a beverage cart (up to 250 lbs.).
- Ability to pass a functional reach assessment with a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach (simultaneous), without shoes on.
- Ability to sit in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule in support of United’s 24/7 operation, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Onboarding and Training Specifics
Successful completion of all pre-employment and training requirements is mandatory:
- Must successfully complete a water evacuation drill during training.
- Must complete pre-employment DOT drug screen, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
- Must pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens. Medical and recreational marijuana use is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the position.
- Must pass a 10-year background check, including criminal history. Background must not prohibit travel to or from any United destination. Candidates with DWI/DUI convictions or probation within the last 10 years may require a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) from the Canadian government to fly to/from Canada as a crew member.
- Must, with or without reasonable accommodation, meet FAA and United Airlines hearing and vision requirements. Hearing loss in the better ear must not exceed 40 dB averaged over 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz. Each eye must be 20/40 or better corrected for both far and near vision.
Compensation and Benefits

- Starting hourly flight pay of $28.88, with the top of the base scale at $67.11 per hour. Pay increases are seniority-based.
- Additional compensation is available for language skills, lead positions, and international trips.
