Role Summary
The Flight Attendant role at United Airlines offers a unique career path combining global travel with essential safety and service responsibilities. This sought-after position does not require prior special schooling or a college degree; comprehensive training is provided internally by United. Key Responsibilities and Proficiencies
A United Flight Attendant is responsible for:
- Ensuring the highest levels of safety and security for all passengers and crew members.

Training Program
Successful candidates will participate in an intensive 6.5-week Initial Training program conducted at United's facility in Houston, TX. This program is designed to equip trainees with United's essential safety and service standards. During training, each trainee will be assigned a base location within one of United's seven major hubs (Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles) or another designated flight attendant base. Relocation funds are not provided. Upon successful completion of training and base orientation, individuals will officially become full-time United employees. United supports trainees during this period with a weekly stipend, dual occupancy hotel accommodations, breakfast, and one additional meal per day. Graduates who successfully complete training will receive a $1,000 bonus.
Compensation and Benefits
United Airlines offers a competitive compensation and benefits package for Flight Attendants:
- Starting hourly flight pay is $28.88, with the top of the base scale reaching $67.11 per hour.
- Pay increases are determined by seniority.
- Additional compensation opportunities exist for language skills, lead positions, and international trips.

Qualifications and Requirements
Prospective Flight Attendants must meet the following qualifications and requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application.
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED is required; two or more years of college is preferred.
- Requires a minimum of one year of customer service experience in a service-related industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food service, teaching/education, aviation, social service).
- Must possess the ability to speak clearly, concisely, and loudly enough to be heard, particularly in emergency situations.
- Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently.
- Must be able to read and speak Hebrew fluently.
- Ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
- Capable of communicating effectively during high-stress situations such as aircraft evacuations, security events, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather, and turbulence.
- Adherence to professional appearance standards, excellent grooming, and compliance with uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Visible tattoos are permitted on arms, wrists, legs, and feet, provided they do not exceed the size of a credit card (3.5" x 2.24") or are covered by standard uniform pieces. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, or neck (including behind the ear). Visible tattoos must not contain offensive imagery (e.g., violent, obscene, sexual, racist, objectionable content, or weapons). Decorative covers, adornments, or jewelry on teeth or in the mouth are prohibited.
- Ability to proficiently operate electronic devices (e.g., phones, tablets, laptops) required for job tasks.
- Must possess a valid passport book prior to application, in good condition, with at least 18 months of remaining validity at the time of application. Applicants must have physical possession of the passport.
- Eligibility to travel globally without restrictions and enter/exit all countries served by United Airlines as a working crew member. Applicants are responsible for verifying their travel eligibility.
- Physical capability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (e.g., luggage to overhead bins, window exits), and push/pull a beverage cart weighing up to 250 lbs.
- Ability to pass a functional reach assessment demonstrating a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach and hold (simultaneous, without shoes) to operate necessary equipment and doors.
- Ability to sit in an assigned jump seat with the seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule supporting United’s 24/7 operation, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Onboarding and Training Expectations
Prospective Flight Attendants should anticipate the following during the onboarding and training process:
- Successful completion of a water evacuation drill is required during training.
- Candidates must be willing to undergo pre-employment DOT drug screening, comprehensive background checks (including fingerprinting and a 10-year history), and vision/hearing tests.
- Ability to pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens. Due to the safety-sensitive nature of the role, medical and recreational marijuana use is prohibited.
- Background checks must not yield results that prohibit travel to any destination served by United. Candidates with DWI/DUI convictions or probation within the last 10 years should research potential travel restrictions, such as those enforced by Canada, and may need a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) if applicable.
- Must meet FAA and United Airlines hearing and vision requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation. This includes corrected vision of 20/40 or better for both far and near vision, and averaged hearing loss in the better ear not exceeding 40 dB at specified frequencies.
