The Role of a Flight Attendant
As a Flight Attendant, the primary responsibility is to uphold the highest safety standards while providing exceptional customer service. Operating within the airline's extensive global network, Flight Attendants serve as brand ambassadors, ensuring a positive and secure travel experience for every passenger. - Being available for global assignments around the clock, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours.

- Working effectively both independently and as an integral part of a crew team.

Training and Development
United provides comprehensive training to prepare individuals for the Flight Attendant role. The journey begins with approximately 6.5 weeks of Initial Training conducted in Houston, TX. During this rigorous program, trainees will master United's safety protocols and service standards. Following successful completion of training and base orientation, individuals transition to full-time employee status. A stipend of $140 per week is provided during training, along with dual occupancy hotel accommodations and two meals per day. Successful training graduates receive a $1,000 bonus. A water evacuation drill in a pool is a required component of training.
Assigned Base Locations
Upon entering training, individuals will be assigned a base from one of United's seven hubs in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles, or other flight attendant base locations. Relocation funds are not provided.
Qualifications and Requirements
Candidates for the Flight Attendant position must meet the following criteria:
- Be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED; two or more years of college are preferred.
- Have at least one year of customer service experience in a service-related industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food service, teaching/education, aviation, social service).
- Demonstrate the ability to speak clearly, concisely, and in an organized manner, with sufficient volume to be heard in an emergency.
- Be fluent in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English.
- Be fluent in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding Dutch.
- Possess the ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
- Be capable of communicating effectively in high-stress environments.
- Maintain a professional appearance with excellent grooming standards, adhering to all uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Specific tattoo restrictions apply; visible tattoos are permitted on arms, wrists, legs, and feet provided they are no larger than a credit card/employee badge (3.5" x 2.24") or are covered by standard uniform pieces, and are not offensive. Decorative covers or jewelry on teeth or in the mouth are not permitted.
- Be proficient in operating electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops) for work-related tasks.
- Hold a valid passport book in physical possession prior to application, in good condition, with at least 18 months of remaining validity. Eligibility to travel globally without restrictions is essential; applicants must be able to enter and exit all countries United serves as a working crew member.
- Possess the physical capability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (e.g., luggage to overhead bins), and push and pull beverage carts (up to 250 lbs).
- Be able to pass a functional reach assessment, achieving a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach and hold (simultaneous), without shoes.
- Be able to sit in an assigned jump seat with required restraints fastened.
- Be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Be willing and able to work a flexible schedule supporting a 24/7 operation, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Pre-Employment Screening:
Successful candidates must pass pre-employment DOT drug screening, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests. The role is safety-sensitive, and all DOT/FAA drug screens must be passed, with medical and recreational marijuana use prohibited. A 10-year background check is required; history must not prohibit international travel. Specific requirements apply regarding DWI/DUI convictions within the last 10 years concerning entry into Canada. Hearing and vision must meet FAA and United Airlines standards.
Compensation and Benefits
United Airlines is pleased to offer its employees a competitive compensation package.
- Starting hourly flight pay is $28.88, with the top of base scale reaching $67.11 per hour.
- Seniority-based pay increases are provided.
