Role Description
Flight Attendants are essential members of the inflight crew, responsible for ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of passengers. This highly desired role requires a commitment to service excellence and the ability to thrive in a dynamic environment. No prior special schooling or college degree is required, as all necessary training is provided by United Airlines.
Training
The journey begins with industry-leading Flight Attendant training. New hires will spend 6.5 weeks attending Initial Training in Houston, TX, learning United's safety and service standards. Upon successful completion, Flight Attendants are welcomed as full-time employees and assigned to a base in one of United's key hubs, which may include Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles, or other designated Flight Attendant base locations (relocation funds are not provided). During training, United provides a weekly stipend, dual occupancy hotel accommodations, and meals. Successful training graduates receive a bonus.

This requires fulfilling reserve assignments on short notice and being away from base for multiple days consecutively.

- Serves and/or sells food and beverages, including alcohol, in a diligent and professional manner.
Qualifications and Requirements
Candidates interested in the Flight Attendant position must meet the following qualifications and requirements:
- Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED. Two or more years of college are preferred.
- Have at least one year of customer service experience in a service-related industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food, teaching/education, aviation, social service).
- Ability to speak clearly, concisely, and in an organized manner, with sufficient volume to be heard in an emergency.
- Speak, read, write, and understand English fluently.
- Ability to speak, read, and write Dutch fluently.
- Ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
- Effectively communicate in high-stress situations such as aircraft evacuation, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather, and turbulence.
- Maintain a professional appearance and excellent grooming standards, adhering to uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, or neck (including behind the ear). Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet are permitted but must not be larger than a credit card/employee badge (3.5 x 2.24 inches) or must be covered by standard uniform pieces. Visible tattoos must not contain offensive imagery (including violent, obscene, sexual, racist, or objectionable content, or weapons).
- Decorative covers, adornments, and/or jewelry on or in the mouth are not permitted.
- Ability to proficiently operate electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops) for required tasks.
- Possess physical possession of a valid U.S. or foreign passport book with applicable visas prior to application. The passport must be in good condition with at least 18 months of remaining validity at the time of application. Having applied for or awaiting a passport is not sufficient.
- Ability to travel to and from all countries United serves without any restrictions as a working crew member, not just as a passenger.
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (such as luggage to overhead bins or window exits), and push and pull a beverage cart (up to 250 lbs.).
- Ability to pass a functional reach assessment with a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach and hold (simultaneous), performed without shoes, to operate necessary equipment and doors.
- Ability to sit in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule supporting United's 24/7 operation, including weekdays, weekends, holidays, and varying hours.
Onboarding and Training Expectations
- Flight Attendant trainees must successfully complete a water evacuation drill during training.
- Candidates must be willing to complete pre-employment DOT drug screens, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
- The position is safety-sensitive, requiring candidates to pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens; medical and recreational marijuana use is prohibited.
- A 10-year background check is required, and the candidate's background must not prohibit travel to or from any location United serves. For example, a DWI/DUI conviction or probation within the last 10 years may restrict travel to Canada unless a Temporary Resident Permit has been secured.
- Candidates must meet FAA and United Airlines hearing and vision requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation, including specific thresholds for hearing loss and corrected vision.
Compensation and Benefits
United offers a competitive compensation package, including competitive pay, exceptional benefits, and travel privileges.
- The starting hourly flight pay is $28.88, with the top of the base scale reaching $67.11 per hour.
- Pay increases are based on seniority, and additional compensation is provided for language skills, lead positions, and international trips.
- This position is also bonus eligible, including profit sharing and a bonus upon successful training completion.
