The Flight Attendant role offers the unique opportunity to traverse the globe while working and is a highly sought-after position. Special schooling or a college degree is not required; United provides comprehensive training for all successful candidates.

Training and Base Assignment:
Newly hired Flight Attendants commence their career with 6.5 weeks of rigorous training in Houston, TX, focused on United's safety protocols and customer service standards. Upon successful completion of training, the individual will be welcomed as a full-time employee and assigned to one of United's seven hubs – Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles – or another Flight Attendant base location. Relocation funds are not provided. During training, United provides a $140/week per diem, along with accommodations, breakfast, and lunch. Successful training graduates receive a $1,000 bonus.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED; two or more years of college is preferred.
- Requires at least one year of customer service experience in a service industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food service, teaching/education, aviation, social service).
- Must be able to speak clearly, concisely, and in an organized manner, with sufficient volume to be heard in an emergency.
- Must be fluent in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
- Must be fluent in speaking and reading Vietnamese.
- Requires the ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in high-stress situations, including aircraft evacuations, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather conditions, and turbulence.
- Must maintain a professional appearance, adhere to excellent grooming standards, and comply with uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos are prohibited on the head, hands, or neck (including behind the ear). Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet are permitted but must not exceed the size of a credit card/employee badge (3.5 inches long x 2.24 inches wide) unless covered by standard uniform pieces. Visible tattoos must not be offensive, violent, obscene, sexual, racist, or contain objectionable content or imagery, including weapons.
- Decorative covers, adornments, and/or jewelry on teeth or in the mouth are not permitted.
- Must be able to proficiently operate electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) for required tasks.
- Must possess a valid passport book prior to application, with at least 18 months of remaining validity. Current physical possession of a valid U.S. passport book or foreign passport book with applicable visas is required, along with eligibility to travel globally without restrictions as a working crew member (not a passenger) to all countries United serves. Having applied for or awaiting a passport is not sufficient.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule supporting United's 24/7 operation, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (such as luggage to overhead bins or window exits), and push and pull beverage carts (up to 250 lbs.).
- Must be able to pass a functional reach assessment with a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach (simultaneous), without shoes, to operate necessary equipment and doors.
- Must be able to sit in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
Onboarding and Training Expectations:
- Flight attendant trainees must successfully complete a water evacuation drill during training.
- Successful candidates must be willing to complete pre-employment DOT drug screening, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
- Must pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens. Medical and recreational marijuana use is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the position.
- Must pass a 10-year background check, including criminal history. The background check must not prohibit travel to any location United flies. For instance, Canada has strict inadmissibility classifications for DWI/DUI charges; candidates with a DWI/DUI conviction or probation within the last 10 years require a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) from the Canadian government to travel there for work duties.
Compensation and Benefits:
United offers a competitive compensation package.
- Starting hourly flight pay is $28.88, with the potential to reach the top of the base scale at $67.11/hour based on seniority.
- Additional compensation is provided for language skills, lead positions, and international trips.
- This position is bonus eligible, including participation in profit sharing.
