Responsibilities

A United Airlines Flight Attendant serves as a primary representative of the airline, responsible for ensuring the safety, comfort, and security of all passengers. Key responsibilities and proficiencies required for this role include:

Qualifications and Requirements

Candidates for the Flight Attendant position must meet specific qualifications to perform the essential functions of this safety-sensitive role:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application.
  • Possesses a high school diploma or GED; candidates with two or more years of college education are preferred.
  • Requires a minimum of one year of customer service experience within a service industry, such as retail, hospitality, food service, teaching/education, aviation, or social services.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to speak clearly, concisely, and audibly, capable of being heard effectively in emergency situations.
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the English language fluently is mandatory.
  • Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing Vietnamese is required.
  • Ability to hear and distinguish all types and ranges of sound.
  • Effective communication skills are essential, particularly in high-stress situations including aircraft evacuations, security events, operational delays, medical emergencies, severe weather, and turbulence.
  • Candidates must maintain a professional appearance, adhere to excellent grooming standards, and comply with all uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, neck, or behind the ear. Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet are permitted if they are no larger than a credit card (3.5 inches long x 2.24 inches wide) or are covered by standard uniform pieces. Visible tattoos must not contain offensive content, including but not limited to violent, obscene, sexual, racist, objectionable content, or imagery including weapons.
  • Decorative covers, adornments, or jewelry on teeth or within the mouth are prohibited.
  • Ability to proficiently operate electronic devices such as phones, tablets, and laptops for completing required tasks.
  • Must possess a valid passport prior to applying, with a minimum of 18 months of remaining validity from the application date.
  • Must be in physical possession of a valid U.S. passport book or foreign passport book with applicable visas and eligibility to travel globally without restrictions. This includes the ability to enter and exit all countries United serves as a working crew member. Having only applied for a passport or awaiting renewal is not sufficient.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule in support of United's 24/7 operation, including availability on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Physically capable of performing duties including standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting heavy objects such as luggage to overhead bins or operating window exits, and pushing and pulling a beverage cart weighing up to 250 lbs.
  • Ability to pass a functional reach assessment, demonstrating a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach simultaneously, without shoes.
  • Ability to sit in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness securely fastened.
  • Required to serve and/or sell food and beverages, including alcoholic beverages, in a diligent and professional manner.

Training Program

Successful candidates will attend a mandatory 6.5-week training program located in Houston, Texas. This comprehensive training focuses on United Airlines' stringent safety procedures and high standards of customer service. Upon successful completion of the training, individuals will be welcomed as full-time employees and assigned to one of United's major hubs or flight attendant base locations, which may include Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles, or other specified bases. Please note that relocation funds are not provided. During the training period, United Airlines provides accommodations, breakfast, lunch, and a weekly stipend of $140. A $1,000 bonus is awarded upon successful graduation from the training program.

Compensation and Benefits

United Airlines is pleased to offer Flight Attendants a competitive compensation structure and comprehensive benefits package.

  • The starting hourly flight pay rate is $28.88, with the top of the base pay scale reaching $67.11 per hour.
  • Pay increases are awarded based on seniority.
  • Additional compensation is provided for specific qualifications such as language skills, holding lead positions, and operating international flights.
  • This position is eligible for participation in bonus programs, including profit sharing.

Additional Information

Candidates must successfully complete pre-employment screenings, including a DOT drug screen, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests. A successful completion of a water evacuation drill during training is required. Compliance with DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens is mandatory; the use of medical or recreational marijuana is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the Flight Attendant role. A 10-year background check is conducted; candidates' background must not prohibit travel to or from any country United serves. Specifically, candidates with a DWI/DUI conviction or probation within the last 10 years may require a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) from the Canadian government to perform work duties traveling to and from Canada.
