Flight Attendant Position

Role and Responsibilities
A United Flight Attendant is primarily responsible for ensuring the highest levels of safety for all passengers while delivering exceptional customer service with a "People-First" demeanor. Key responsibilities include:

Training
Newly hired Flight Attendants participate in a comprehensive 6.5-week training program located in Houston, TX. This training covers United's rigorous safety and customer service standards. United provides accommodations, breakfast, and lunch during training, along with a $140 weekly stipend. Upon successful completion of training, individuals are welcomed as full-time employees and assigned to one of United's seven major hubs – Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles – or another designated flight attendant base location (relocation funds are not provided). A $1,000 bonus is awarded to successful training graduates.
Qualifications and Requirements
Candidates for the Flight Attendant position must meet the following criteria:
- Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED; two or more years of college education is preferred.
- Hold at least one year of customer service experience in the service industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food, teaching/education, aviation, social service).
- Ability to speak clearly, concisely, and in an organized manner, with sufficient volume to be heard in an emergency.
- Must be fluent in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English.
- Must be fluent in speaking and reading Thai.
- Ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
- Capable of effective communication during high-stress situations such as aircraft evacuation, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather, and turbulence.
- Maintain a professional appearance with excellent grooming standards and adhere to uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Visible tattoos are permitted on arms, wrists, legs, and feet if no larger than a credit card (approx. 3.5" x 2.24") or covered by the standard uniform; tattoos on the head, hands, or neck (including behind the ear) are not permitted. Visible tattoos must not be offensive. Decorative covers, adornments, or jewelry on or in the teeth/mouth are not permitted.
- Ability to proficiently operate electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops) for required tasks.
- Must possess a valid U.S. passport book or eligible foreign passport book with applicable visas at the time of application, with at least 18 months of remaining validity. Physical possession of the passport is required; having applied or waiting for renewal is not sufficient.
- Ability to travel to and from all countries United serves without restriction as a working crew member, not as a passenger. Applicants are responsible for verifying their travel eligibility to current United destinations.
- Capable of performing physical tasks including standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting heavy objects (e.g., luggage to overhead bins), and pushing/pulling beverage carts (up to 250 lbs).
- Ability to pass a functional reach assessment with a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach (simultaneous), without shoes.
- Ability to sit in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
- Required to serve and/or sell food and beverages (including alcohol) professionally.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Willing and able to work a flexible schedule supporting a 24/7 operation (weekdays, weekends, holidays, etc.).
Pre-employment and Training Expectations
Successful candidates must:
- Successfully complete a water evacuation drill during training.
- Pass pre-employment DOT drug screens, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
- Pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens; medical and recreational marijuana is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the role.
- Pass a 10-year background check, including criminal history. Travel restrictions resulting from background checks (e.g., Canadian inadmissibility for DWI/DUI within 10 years without a Temporary Resident Permit) may prevent employment.
Compensation and Benefits
United Airlines offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. The starting hourly flight pay is $28.88, with a potential top base scale reaching $67.11 per hour. Pay increases are seniority-based, and additional compensation is provided for language skills, lead positions, and international trips.
The benefits package includes competitive medical, dental, and vision insurance, life, accident & disability coverage, an Employee Assistance Program, commuter benefits, paid holidays, paid time off (vacation and sick time), and a 401(k) retirement plan. This position is also bonus eligible, participating in profit sharing.
