Key Responsibilities
The Flight Attendant's primary focus is the safety and service of passengers. Responsibilities include:

Qualifications and Requirements
Prospective Flight Attendants must meet the following criteria:
- Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED; two or more years of college is preferred.
- Have a minimum of one year of customer service experience within the service industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food service, teaching/education, aviation, social service).
- Demonstrate the ability to speak in a clear, concise, and organized manner, with sufficient volume to be heard in emergency situations.
- Be fluent in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English. Proficiency in a second language is highly desirable and an asset.
- Specific language fluency needs include Arabic, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Tagalog.
- Possess the ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
- Be capable of communicating effectively in high-stress situations such as aircraft evacuation, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather, and turbulence.
- Maintain a professional appearance, adhere to excellent grooming standards, and comply with uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, or neck, including behind the ear. Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet are permitted if no larger than a credit card/employee badge (3.5x2.24 inches) or are covered by standard uniform pieces. Visible tattoos must not be offensive. Decorative covers, adornments, or jewelry on teeth or in the mouth are not permitted.
- Be proficient in operating electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops) required for job tasks.
- Must possess a valid U.S. passport book or foreign passport book with applicable visas prior to application, with at least 18 months of validity remaining. Physical possession of the passport is required at the time of application.
- Be able to travel to and from all countries United serves without any restrictions, entering and exiting as a working crew member. Applicants are responsible for verifying their travel eligibility to all current and future destinations served by United.
- Meet physical requirements including the ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects such as luggage to the overhead bin or window exit, and push/pull a beverage cart weighing up to 250 lbs.
- Pass a functional reach assessment demonstrating a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach and hold (simultaneous), without shoes.
- Be able to sit securely in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Be willing and able to work a flexible schedule to support United’s 24/7 operation, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Onboarding and Training
Successful candidates will undergo comprehensive training and screening processes:
- Completion of a 6.5-week training program in Houston, TX, covering United's safety and customer service standards.
- Successful completion of a water (pool) evacuation drill during training.
- Completion of pre-employment DOT drug screening, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
- Passing DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens; medical and recreational marijuana is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the role.
- Passing a 10-year background check, including criminal history, that does not prohibit travel to any destination served by United. Candidates with DWI/DUI convictions or probation within the last 10 years must ensure they meet travel eligibility requirements for countries such as Canada.
- Upon successful completion of training, individuals become full-time employees and are assigned to one of United's hubs – Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles – or another flight attendant base location. Relocation funds are not provided.
- During training, United provides a $140/week stipend, accommodations, breakfast, and lunch.
- Successful training graduates receive a $1,000 bonus.
Compensation and Benefits
United Airlines offers a competitive compensation and benefits package for its Flight Attendants:
- Starting hourly flight pay is $28.88, with the potential to reach the top of the base scale at $67.11 per hour.
- Pay increases are seniority-based.
- Additional compensation is provided for language skills, lead positions, and international trips.
- This position is bonus eligible, participating in profit sharing.
