Position Summary
The Flight Attendant is a vital member of the airline's Inflight crew, primarily responsible for ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers during flight. This role requires a strong commitment to safety protocols, exceptional customer service skills, flexibility, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Flight Attendants represent United Airlines with pride and distinction, contributing to customer loyalty through outstanding service.
Key Responsibilities
- Prioritize and ensure the highest levels of safety for all passengers and crew members.
- Provide a "People-First" approach, adapting to various customer-facing scenarios with optimism, positivity, and strong interpersonal skills.
- Engage directly with customers, exercising good judgment and resolving issues with understanding, compassion, and grace.
- Serve and/or sell food and beverages, including alcohol, in a diligent and professional manner.
- Proficiently operate electronic devices necessary for job tasks.
- Effectively communicate in high-stress situations, such as emergencies, security threats, delays, or medical incidents.
- Maintain flexibility to work a 24/7 operation, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours, fulfilling reserve assignments and being away from base for multiple days.
- Demonstrate dependability and timeliness to support operational schedules and meet customer expectations.
- Work collaboratively as a team player while also performing tasks independently.
- Contribute to creating memorable travel experiences for customers on every flight.
Qualifications and Requirements
Prospective Flight Attendants must meet the following criteria:
- Minimum age of 21 years at the time of application.
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED; two or more years of college preferred.
- At least one year of verifiable customer service experience in a service-related industry (e.g., retail, hospitality, food service, education, aviation, social service).
- Ability to speak clearly, concisely, and in an organized manner, with sufficient volume to be heard in an emergency.
- Must be fluent in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
- Ability to speak and read German fluently is required.
- Ability to hear all types and ranges of sound.
- Maintain a professional appearance and adhere to excellent grooming standards, including specific guidelines regarding uniforms, hair, tattoos, and piercings. Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet are permitted but must not exceed the size of a credit card/employee badge (3.5 x 2.24 inches) or must be covered by uniform pieces. Tattoos must not be offensive. Decorative covers or adornments on teeth are not permitted.
- Must possess a valid passport book prior to application with at least 18 months of validity remaining. The passport must be in good condition, and physical possession is required at the time of application.
- Ability to travel to and from all countries United serves without any restrictions as a working crew member. Applicants are responsible for verifying travel eligibility.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (such as luggage), push and pull beverage carts (up to 250 lbs.).
- Ability to pass a functional reach assessment with a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach and hold (simultaneous) without shoes.
- Ability to sit comfortably in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule supporting a 24/7 operation, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Training and Onboarding
Successful candidates will participate in a comprehensive 6.5-week training program located in Houston, TX. Training covers United's safety protocols and customer service standards. Training graduates will be welcomed as full-time employees and assigned to one of United's base locations, including Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles, or other designated Flight Attendant bases (relocation funds are not provided).
- During training, United provides accommodations, breakfast, and lunch, along with a $140/week stipend.
- Trainees must successfully complete a water evacuation drill.
- Pre-employment requirements include a DOT drug screen, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, vision/hearing tests, and randomized DOT/FAA drug screens (marijuana use is prohibited). A 10-year background check is required, which must not prohibit travel to any destination United serves.
Compensation and Benefits

- Starting hourly flight pay is $28.88/hour, with a top base scale reaching $67.11/hour.
- Pay increases are seniority-based, with additional compensation available for language skills, lead positions, and international trips.
