Flight Attendant
United Airlines is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to join its team as Flight Attendants. In this highly sought-after role, the Flight Attendant will play a crucial part in ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of passengers while delivering exceptional customer service. The Flight Attendant represents United with pride and distinction, creating memorable experiences for every customer on every flight.
The Flight Attendant's responsibilities include maintaining the highest levels of safety, adapting to diverse customer-facing scenarios with optimism and positivity, and resolving issues with understanding and grace. Flexibility is essential, as the Flight Attendant must be available for global assignments 24/7, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours, fulfilling reserve assignments on short notice and potentially being away from their base for extended periods. Dependability and timeliness are critical for maintaining schedules and meeting customer expectations. The Flight Attendant must also be a consistent team player, capable of working independently and collaboratively.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED; two or more years of college is preferred.
- Must have at least one year of customer service experience in the service industry (such as retail, hospitality, food, teaching/education, aviation, or social service).
- Must be able to speak in a clear, concise, and organized manner, loudly enough to be heard in an emergency.
- Must have the ability to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently. Proficiency in a second language is highly desirable. Languages such as Arabic, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Tagalog are an asset.
- Must be able to hear all types and ranges of sound.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in the event of high-stress situations such as aircraft evacuation, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather conditions, and turbulence.
- Must maintain a professional appearance and excellent grooming standards, adhering to uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, or neck. Visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet are permitted if they are not larger than a credit card (3.5 inches long x 2.24 inches wide) or are covered by standard uniform pieces and are not offensive. Decorative covers, adornments, and/or jewelry on teeth or in the mouth are not permitted.
- Must have the ability to proficiently operate electronic devices (phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) for the completion of required tasks.
- Must possess a valid passport with at least 18 months of validity remaining prior to its expiration at the time of application.
- Must have the current physical possession of a valid U.S. passport book or foreign passport book with applicable visas and eligibility to travel globally without restrictions.
- Must be able to travel to and from all countries United serves without any restrictions.
- Must have the ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects (such as luggage to overhead bin or window exit) and push and pull a beverage cart (up to 250 lbs.).
- Must have the ability to pass a functional reach assessment with a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach (simultaneous), without shoes on, in order to operate all necessary equipment, machinery, and doors.
- Must have the ability to sit in an assigned jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
- Required to serve and/or sell food and beverages (including alcohol) in a diligent and professional manner.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule in support of United’s 24/7 operation (must be available to work weekdays, weekends, holidays, etc.).
- Must be willing to complete pre-employment DOT drug screen, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
- Must be able to pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens. Medical and recreational marijuana is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the Flight Attendant position.
- Must be able to pass a 10-year background check, including criminal background history that does not prohibit travel to or from anywhere United flies.
Compensation and Benefits:
The starting hourly flight pay is $28.88, with the top of the base scale reaching $67.11 per hour. Seniority-based pay increases are offered, along with additional compensation for language skills, lead positions, and international trips. United Airlines offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) plan, vacation and sick time, an employee assistance program, commuter benefits, paid holidays, and flight privileges (subject to the respective collective bargaining agreement). During training, United provides a $140/week stipend, along with accommodations, breakfast, and lunch. A $1,000 bonus is provided upon successful completion of training.
