Training and Onboarding

The journey to becoming a United Flight Attendant commences with world-class, industry-leading training. Successful candidates will complete 6.5 weeks of Initial Training in Houston, TX, focusing on United's stringent safety protocols and renowned service standards. During this period, trainees will be assigned a base location from one of United's seven major hubs – Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles – or other designated Flight Attendant bases. Please note that relocation funds are not provided. Upon successful completion of training and subsequent base orientation, individuals will be welcomed as full-time United employees.

Onboarding and Training Expectations:

  • Flight Attendant trainees are required to successfully complete an evacuation drill in water (pool) during training.
  • Candidates must be willing to complete a pre-employment DOT drug screen, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
  • Ability to pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and randomized drug screens is mandatory. Medical and recreational marijuana use is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the Flight Attendant position.
  • Successful completion of a 10-year background check, including criminal history, is required. The background must not prohibit travel to or from any destination United serves. For instance, Canadian regulations classify DWI/DUI charges (including misdemeanors) within the last 10 years as inadmissible, unless a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) has been secured from the Canadian government allowing continued work duties.
  • Must, with or without reasonable accommodation, meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and United Airlines hearing and vision requirements. This includes not having hearing loss on audiometry in the better ear greater than 40 dB when losses at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz are averaged; and each eye must be 20/40 or better corrected for both far and near vision.

  • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
