A United Flight Attendant is primarily responsible for ensuring the highest levels of safety for all passengers and fellow crew members. Given United's extensive route network, flexibility is paramount. Flight Attendants must be available for global assignments 24/7, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours. This includes fulfilling reserve assignments on short notice and being away from their base for multiple days. Dependability and timeliness are critical for operational success and meeting customer expectations. The position also requires serving and/or selling food and beverages professionally.

Successful candidates will participate in comprehensive, paid training. The initial phase involves approximately 6.5 weeks of training in Houston, TX, where trainees learn United's safety procedures and customer service standards. During this training, United provides accommodations, daily breakfast and lunch, and a weekly stipend of $140. Upon successful completion of training, individuals are welcomed as full-time employees and assigned to one of United's seven hubs (Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles) or another flight attendant base location. Relocation funds are not provided. Successful training graduates receive a $1,000 bonus.
United offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. Starting hourly flight pay is $28.88, with the potential to reach a top base scale of $67.11 per hour. Pay increases are based on seniority, and additional compensation is provided for language skills, lead positions, and international trips.

Flight Attendant candidates must successfully complete a water evacuation drill during training. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing pre-employment requirements, including a DOT drug screen, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests. The DOT/FAA mandates pre-employment and randomized drug screening; the use of medical or recreational marijuana is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the role. Candidates must pass a 10-year background check, including criminal history, which must not prohibit travel to any United destination. For example, convictions or probation for DWI/DUI within the last 10 years may restrict travel to Canada unless a Temporary Resident Permit has been obtained.
