Compensation and Benefits
This position offers a competitive hourly rate of $76.64, with potential for increases based on the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Overtime and shift premiums are also available. Job Summary
The Flight Operations Flight Instructor plays a vital role in Southwest Airlines' mission. This position contributes to the Flight Operations Department by providing comprehensive training to pilots, ensuring adherence to Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), the Advanced Qualification Program Manual (AQPM), the Flight Operations Training Manual (FOTM), and company requirements. Responsibilities encompass both classroom instruction and simulator training, equipping pilots with the necessary knowledge and practical skills to deliver safe and reliable air travel for our customers. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for effective instruction.
Additional Details

Responsibilities
- Prepare and conduct classroom and simulator training aligned with FARs, training policies/manuals, and company requirements.
- Facilitate effective pilot learning.
- Develop and create instructional and evaluation materials for training programs.
- Maintain the currency and integrity of course materials through self-study, skills practice, critique review, and instructor meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge and experience operating training equipment, including computer-based training workstations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
- Comprehensive understanding of flight training instructional duties and FAR training requirements.
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to interpret technical aircraft documents, follow instructions, learn new technical concepts, and prepare clear and concise technical documentation.
- Ability to produce accurate work under pressure while maintaining flexibility.
- Ability to work varied hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, on a rotating schedule to cover 24/7 operations.
Education and Experience
- Required: High School Diploma or GED.
- Required: Significant experience operating an aircraft.
Licensing/Certification
- Required: Unrestricted U.S. DOT/FAA Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with the following endorsements: "Airplane Multiengine Land" category and class ratings, and "English Proficient" limitation.
- Required: Valid United States Driver's License.
- Required: Meets all regulatory criteria for Flight Deck Jumpseat Access and continuous enrollment in Rap Back.
Physical Abilities
- Ability to view and read computer/video/flight deck displays.
- Ability to participate in the FAR-directed Line Observation Program and enter/exit aircraft safely.
- Ability to enter/exit flight simulator, cabin simulator, or mock-up and briefing rooms safely.
- Ability to sit uninterrupted in the simulator for up to 4 hours.
- Ability to work in a limited workspace for extended periods.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English.
- Proficiency in using computers and office productivity tools.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to work at elevated heights and operate a flight simulator.
- Ability to manipulate flight controls at full deflection.
- Ability to pass annual flight evaluations.
- Ability to converse, present, and facilitate for up to 8 hours.
- Ability to make/receive audible callouts in classroom and/or simulator settings.

- Maintains a professional appearance according to company standards.
- U.S. citizenship or authorization to work in the United States.

- Minimum age of 23.

- Ability to work rotating shifts, holidays, and overtime.
