Instructor/Check Pilot - DHC-8
About the Role
Berry Aviation, Inc. is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Instructor Pilot (IP) and Check Pilot (CP) for the DHC-8 aircraft. This critical full-time position, based at the Corporate Headquarters in San Marcos, TX, involves serving as a ground, flight simulator, and aircraft instructor, ensuring the highest standards of pilot proficiency and operational safety. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in the professional development of pilots, instructors, and check pilot candidates, adhering strictly to 14 CFR Part 135, company Operations Specifications, and comprehensive training program requirements. This role also includes maintaining Pilot In Command (PIC), Instructor Pilot, and Check Pilot qualifications in the DHC-8, with an emphasis on special mission capabilities, and the flexibility to operate as PIC on both revenue and non-revenue flights, domestically and internationally, as required.
Key Responsibilities
The Instructor/Check Pilot will be responsible for a diverse range of instructional and evaluative duties, including:
- Delivering comprehensive ground and flight training, alongside continuous mentoring, for Instructor Pilot and Check Pilot candidates across initial qualification, recurrent, and requalification curriculums and modules, in strict adherence to the company's DHC-8 Pilot Training Program.
- Providing expert classroom and flight instruction, and conducting pilot testing, specifically for special operations and mission capabilities such as Radar Approaches, Night Vision Goggle (NVG) operations, and Aerial Delivery.
- Conducting classroom instruction for both aircraft-specific and non-aircraft-specific subjects, extending to pilots not assigned to the incumbent's primary aircraft type(s).
- Administering pilot flight instruction utilizing flight training devices, advanced simulators, and DHC-8 aircraft.
- Executing oral, written, and practical pilot evaluations in full compliance with applicable Federal Aviation Regulations (CFRs), company Operations Specifications (OpSpecs), and established training and testing standards.
- Ensuring the timely and accurate completion of all required documentation following training and testing activities.
- Collaborating with the Director of Training (DOT) to research, evaluate, and implement new or revised training systems, policies, procedures, and techniques.
- Acting as a vital liaison between the Chief Pilot and the Director of Training to codify and standardize operational areas and topics.
- Serving as a subject matter expert and primary liaison between line-of-business and field units and the Director of Training, facilitating the validation and verification of training programs and protocols.
- Performing other duties as directed by the Director of Training.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Possession of an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate with an Airplane Multi-engine Land (AMEL) rating.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Class I Medical Certificate.
- Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs).
- Proven leadership abilities, exceptional interpersonal skills, and a highly professional demeanor.
- Must possess a valid U.S. Passport.
- Ability to acquire and maintain, or currently hold, an active U.S. Secret Clearance or higher.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current DHC-8 Type Rating.
- Previous experience as a flight or simulator instructor pilot under 14 CFR Part 121, 135, or 142, or equivalent military aviation instructional experience.
- Previous experience as a flight or simulator check pilot under 14 CFR Part 121, 135, or 142, or equivalent military aviation check pilot experience.
- Direct experience with Night Vision Goggle (NVG) operations and aerial delivery procedures.
- Location within commuting distance of San Marcos Regional Airport (KHYI) or Concord-Padgett Regional Airport (KJQF) is highly advantageous.
- Proficiency in standard office suite computer programs.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
Candidates must meet the following physical and environmental demands:
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
- Capability to perform assigned pilot duties, including extended periods of confined sitting for up to 10 flight hours per day.
- Willingness to work in diverse environmental and weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and adverse weather, during outdoor operations.
- Readiness to travel extensively to fulfill training and operational responsibilities.
- Adaptability to various working environments, including indoor facilities, outdoor locations, and austere operating conditions within potentially hostile areas of operation, which may involve threats from enemy combatants both airborne and on the ground.
