Primary Responsibilities of a SkyWest Flight Attendant
The core responsibility of a SkyWest Flight Attendant is to ensure the utmost safety and comfort of passengers onboard the aircraft. This dynamic and exciting position offers daily opportunities to travel, confront new challenges, and invigorate the customer experience, embodying the essence of SkyWest. Key duties include:
- Ensuring the safety and comfort of all customers throughout their flight.
- Consistently fostering a positive and productive work environment for both colleagues and passengers.
- Efficiently preparing, serving, and restocking in-flight beverages, meals, and snacks, alongside facilitating onboard liquor and food sales.
- Warmly greeting passengers, assisting with the secure stowage of carry-on baggage, and delivering clear and concise onboard announcements.
- Providing effective leadership, direction, and assistance during both emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Skillfully and calmly resolving passenger-related situations during flight, including instances of disorderly conduct or medical emergencies.
- Ensuring strict compliance with safety regulations by thoroughly inspecting and safely operating aircraft cabin components, systems, and emergency equipment such as escape slides, fire extinguishers, portable oxygen bottles, and automatic external defibrillators (AEDs).
- Adhering meticulously to established procedures and performance standards with minimal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications
Prospective Flight Attendants must meet the following criteria:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalency is required.
- Prior to commencing training, applicants must hold a current, valid U.S. or foreign passport book, valid for at least 12 months beyond the application date, along with any necessary visas for unrestricted travel between the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Bahamas.
- Demonstrates excellent English communication skills, crucial for conveying safety information to passengers and drafting clear, factual, and detailed reports concerning irregular, emergency, and security events.
- Proficient in utilizing basic functions of electronic devices and Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) for operating audio and video systems, tracking in-flight purchases, and performing other flight and training duties.
- Willingness to work varied shifts, extending up to 16 hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Capable of frequent travel and comfortable spending extended periods alone and without direct supervision.
- Exhibits reliability and punctuality consistently.
- Must be willing to relocate to one of SkyWest's assigned crew domiciles upon successful completion of the InFlight Training program. Current domicile locations include:

Physical and Other Requirements
Candidates must meet specific physical and appearance standards:
- Height and weight must permit the safe operation of the aircraft and adhere to specific aircraft dimensions. This includes the ability to sit comfortably in a jump seat with a fastened harness, move freely throughout the cabin aisle, and operate emergency exits. Height must be between 5’0” to 6’0” without shoes.
- Physically capable of performing tasks requiring frequent walking, bending below ankle level, and reaching above shoulder level. Must be able to open emergency exits and close aircraft doors (weighing up to 45 pounds), push and pull beverage carts (weighing up to 250 pounds), and lift, store, transport, and reach for items, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Corrected vision should not exceed 20/40.
- Normal or corrected hearing range within 15-17kHZ.
- Maintain a professional, neat, and clean overall appearance.
- Extreme hair styles or colors are not permitted.
- A single stud nose piercing (2mm or smaller) is allowed. A maximum of two piercings per ear is permitted. Ear gauges must be plugged with clear or skin-toned plugs and not exceed ½”. Other facial, mouth, or tongue piercings are strictly prohibited.
- Visible tattoos are permitted with limitations based on their dimension and location. Tattoos that do not comply with these guidelines must be covered by the uniform or with skin-tone compatible tattoo makeup. Bandages are not an approved form of tattoo coverage. Offensive tattoos must never be visible.
- Must wear a company-issued uniform and a compliant face mask/covering as required.
Compensation and Benefits
- Guaranteed Flight Hours: Upon successful completion of Phase One and Phase Two of Initial New Hire training, new hire Flight Attendants are guaranteed 76 flight hours as a reserve. This means remuneration for 76 flight hours, regardless of whether fewer actual flight hours are accumulated within the month.
- Starting Pay: The starting pay is $29.73 per flight hour. Base compensation is calculated as 76 flight hours multiplied by $29.73 per flight hour, totaling $2,437.80 gross per month. This figure does not include per diem boarding pay or any flight hours worked beyond the monthly guarantee.
- Per Diem: Additionally, Flight Attendants receive $2.25 per diem for every hour spent on duty away from their assigned domicile.
