A recruitment event for this position will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii. Candidates selected for interviews will receive specific dates and times. The comprehensive interview process typically includes a Virtual Panel Interview, an In-Person Group Interview held in Honolulu, HI, and an In-Person Final Interview which includes language testing, also conducted in Honolulu, HI.
Position Summary
The primary function of a Hawaiian Airlines Flight Attendant is to ensure the safety and security of all guests aboard Company aircraft. This requires individuals to be physically and psychologically capable of performing critical safety procedures and assisting guests effectively during emergencies. Flight Attendants operate in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, requiring the ability to manage emergency situations and interact professionally and pleasantly with diverse personalities.
Beyond safety, Flight Attendants are responsible for delivering a consistent and prescribed level of customer service within the aircraft cabin. This includes providing food and beverage service, all while ensuring an unsurpassed Aloha experience for every guest.
Key Responsibilities
- Participates in pre-flight briefings covering weather, altitudes, routes, emergency procedures, crew coordination, flight duration, and onboard services.
- Greets and directs guests to assigned seats, providing answers to flight-related inquiries.
- Assists guests with the proper stowage of carry-on luggage in overhead compartments or under seats.
- Demonstrates the correct use of safety equipment, including seat belts, oxygen masks, and life jackets, and outlines emergency procedures prior to takeoff.
- Monitors aisles to ensure guest adherence to safety regulations, addresses and resolves safety infractions, and effectively de-escalates difficult guest situations.
- Directs and assists guests through emergency procedures, such as aircraft evacuation following an emergency landing.
- Provides food and beverage service consistently and according to established procedures.
- Collects and reconciles payments for onboard products, including alcoholic beverages, meals, and duty-free sales.
- Administers first aid when necessary.
- Prepares both written and verbal reports detailing emergency or safety incidents that occur during flight.
- Prepares guests and the aircraft for landing in accordance with established procedures.
- Successfully completes annual FAA-approved re-certification training provided by Hawaiian Airlines.
- Maintains the ability to obtain and retain an Airport Operations Area (AOA) Badge.
- Acquires and sustains current knowledge and competency in emergency procedures, adhering to Hawaiian Airlines and FAA regulations.
- Demonstrates availability to work variable schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Exhibits effective and professional interaction skills with both colleagues and guests.
- Collaborates effectively with fellow crew members to deliver an exceptional Aloha experience, responding promptly and pleasantly to guest inquiries, requests, and complaints.
- Possesses the ability to identify potential issues or hazards and escalate concerns appropriately.
- Adapts to diverse climates and geographical locations and is capable of working variable shifts globally.
- Maintains the physical capacity to fly at high altitudes and meet the rigorous demands of the role.
- Assists ill or incapacitated passengers and fellow crew members as required.
- Capable of performing aircraft evacuation duties in challenging conditions, such as dense smoke during a cabin fire.
- Proficiently handles and operates oxygen bottles and fire extinguishers.
- Can remove and lift emergency cabin windows, weighing up to 60 pounds.
- Capable of executing an emergency slide jump from an approximate height of 24.5 feet.
All outlined duties, particularly those concerning emergency procedures, are considered essential functions of the Flight Attendant position.
Minimum Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application.
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
- Must present a professional image, with no visible body art (including tattoos), facial, multiple, or upper ear piercings, gauge piercings, or extreme hair colors or styles when in the Flight Attendant Uniform or in public areas.
- Demonstrates strong customer service skills and the proven ability to effectively de-escalate and resolve challenging customer situations.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English is mandatory.
- Must possess advanced/business level Japanese language proficiency, including the ability to speak fluently and read Romaji or Kanji.
- Successful completion of an FAA-approved, unpaid eight-week intensive training program provided by Hawaiian Airlines is required.
- Must be able to relocate within the state of Hawaii or the continental United States.
- Availability to work alternative schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, is essential.
- Ability to achieve a vertical reach of 82 inches.
- Capable of sitting in a cabin crew jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness securely fastened.
- Successful completion of all pre-employment requirements, including a drug test, tuberculosis (TB) screening, and a comprehensive background check.
- Possession of a valid passport is required, along with the ability to secure all necessary visas for travel to countries served by Hawaiian Airlines.
- Candidates must possess the legal right to travel from all countries served by Hawaiian Airlines.
- All travel documents must remain valid throughout all phases of training and employment.
- Flight Attendants operate in an environment subject to varying climatic conditions, variable positive and negative gravitational loads induced by turbulence, and fluctuating levels of cabin pressurization. The role also necessitates standing for durations of four to seventeen hours, during which stooping, twisting, and pulling/pushing cabin equipment may be required.
- Current Hawaiian Airlines employees must be in good standing with the company.
Hawaiian Airlines is regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT – regulation, 49 CFR part 40). All applicants are advised that post-offer and/or pre-employment drug testing will be conducted for the presence of Marijuana, Cocaine, Opioids, PCP (Phencyclidine), and Amphetamine prior to any offer of employment or transfer into a safety-sensitive position. Failure to submit to testing or positive indications of drug use will render the applicant ineligible for employment with Hawaiian Airlines, and any employment offer will be withdrawn.
In addition to routine employment eligibility verification, U.S.-based airlines are required to gather information to validate country of citizenship and country of birth. Upon hire, documentation proving current country citizenship and birthplace must be provided.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship. Hawaiian Airlines will not sponsor applicants for nonimmigrant or immigrant employment visas or status for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two (2) years of direct customer experience within the hospitality or airline industry; OR four (4) years of customer contact and customer service issue resolution experience with the general public in sectors such as retail, education, healthcare, or professional services.
- A college education or degree is preferred.
