The Opportunity:
The C-17 Pilot Instructor plays a critical role in shaping the next generation of aviation professionals. This individual will be responsible for delivering engaging and effective ground-based training to C-17 pilots, utilizing a variety of tools and methodologies including the Weapon System Trainer (WST), C-17 aircraft, Computer-Based Trainers (CBT), and other ground training resources. This role focuses on fostering pilot proficiency in air drop, aerial refueling, and transport operating procedures, including the critical ability to diagnose and remediate student challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver dynamic and engaging training utilizing a range of instructional tools and methodologies.
- Cultivate and maintain a high level of subject matter expertise, instructional proficiency, and overall aviation knowledge.
- Conduct insightful briefings and debriefings, providing constructive feedback and guidance to pilots and Maintenance Engine Run personnel.
- Manage administrative tasks associated with training, including interfacing with user organizations, meticulous record-keeping, monitoring student progress, providing mentorship and counseling, and contributing to the development and maintenance of top-tier training programs.
- Collaborate on courseware enhancements, modifications, and updates to ensure training materials remain current and effective.
- Maintain instructional proficiency by flying the WST as required.
- Enhance operational procedure currency and observe student progress by participating in flights as an observer.
- Serve as a C-17 Pilot Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing valuable insights to students, personnel, and during test events.
- Assume additional responsibilities as assigned, including:
- Flight Check Airman (FCA) Lead
- Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Evaluator
- Simulator Certification (SIMCERT)/Simulator Evaluation (SIMVAL) duties
- Project and development work support
- Participation in Operations Group Standardization/Evaluation (Stan/Eval) Boards (SEB), Training Review Panels (TRP), and Formal Training Unit (FTU) instructor meetings.
- Attendance at Headquarters (HQ) Air Mobility Command (AMC) curriculum reviews, HQ AMC Stan/Eval Conferences, and Flight Manual Review Conferences (FMRC).
- Learning Center monitor duties
- Safety representative duties
- Physical/cyber security representative duties
- Hazardous materials (HAZMAT) duties
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of flying experience, including five (5) years as a C-17 pilot with demonstrable air drop and aerial refueling expertise (waiver possibility through AMC/A3TK).
- At least two (2) years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience encompassing air drop, aerial refueling, and tactical maneuvers.
- Recent C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor experience and CATS MECOC certification are highly desirable.
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills, enabling effective communication with diverse audiences.
- Strong understanding of instructional principles and theories related to Training Systems (TS).
- Proficiency in personal computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
- Ability to successfully complete annual internal standardization evaluations.
- Active SECRET Security Clearance.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This role requires individuals to communicate effectively, sit, stand, walk, and utilize hands for various tasks. Occasional reaching, stooping, and kneeling are also necessary. The position demands frequent ingress/egress from the simulator and aircraft, often in inclement weather and temperature extremes adhering to Air Force and company guidelines. The ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds frequently and 35 pounds occasionally is required. Noise levels can fluctuate from quiet to extremely loud. Successful candidates must be able to exit the WST via an escape ladder.
