Key Responsibilities and Training Requirements

The journey to becoming a certified Flight Attendant begins with a comprehensive, mandatory 6-week unpaid training program. This intensive training equips the candidate to become a certified safety professional, service expert, and trusted representative of the American Airlines brand. Once certified, the Flight Attendant's core responsibilities include:

Essential Qualifications for Success

Minimum Requirements

• Must be a minimum of 20 years of age.
• Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
• A minimum of two years of documented customer service experience in relevant industries, such as retail, hospitality, food service, education, aviation, or social services.
• Height and weight must permit the safe execution of aircraft operations, including the ability to:
  • Sit in a jump seat and fasten the safety harness without modifications or extenders.
  • Navigate throughout the cabin aisle and efficiently operate emergency exits.
• Must possess a valid U.S. or foreign passport with all applicable visas, ensuring documentation is valid through at least December 31, 2026.
• Candidates holding a foreign passport must possess all necessary and valid documentation (e.g., work authorization, visas, permanent resident card) to legally work and travel as a Flight Attendant within the U.S. and internationally. It is the candidate’s responsibility to understand and obtain all required visas.
• Must have the legal right to work in the United States and the ability to travel unrestricted to and from all states and international countries served by American Airlines.
• Willingness to relocate based on the company’s operational needs. Potential base locations include BOS, CLT, DCA, DFW, LGA, LAX, MIA, ORD, PHL, and PHX.
• Must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required by the operational schedule.
• Must be available to report for on-call (reserve) duty at the assigned base. Reserve duty may continue for an undetermined number of years.
• Must be capable of professionally representing the American Airlines brand while in the Flight Attendant uniform. Specific appearance standards include:

  No visible tattoos, no more than one (1) earring per ear, and no facial piercings.
