Essential Duties and Responsibilities
New Flight Attendant Trainees commence their journey with a mandatory, comprehensive six-week unpaid training program. Upon successful certification, the Flight Attendant is responsible for the following key operational duties:
- Ensuring absolute compliance with all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and rigorous company procedures to secure the safety and comfort of all customers.
- Demonstrating decisive leadership and composure when responding to all emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Maintaining exemplary standards of dependability and professionalism to guarantee operational efficiency and on-time departures.
- Exhibiting resilience and adaptability by managing long hours, irregular schedules, and remaining composed within a dynamic operational environment.
- Working effectively without direct supervision while performing as a collaborative and dependable member of the flight crew.
- Delivering exceptional in-flight service, including the professional distribution of hot and cold meals and beverages, and the execution of onboard sales processes.
- Adhering strictly to all company policies, procedures, and performance standards, including rigorous uniform and appearance guidelines.
- Handling a wide variety of customer-facing situations, both onboard and off the aircraft, with the utmost care and professionalism.
- Operating effectively in diverse global environments, including various climates and time zones across the airline’s network.
Candidate Qualifications and Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a minimum of 20 years of age at the time of application.
- Possession of a High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) equivalent is required.
- A minimum of two (2) years of verifiable customer service experience is mandatory, preferably within high-touch industries such as retail, hospitality, food service, education, or aviation.
- Must meet physical requirements necessary for safe aircraft operation, including the ability to:
- Sit securely in a jump seat and fasten the safety harness without modifications or extenders.
- Operate emergency exits and navigate throughout the cabin aisle effectively.
- Possession of a valid U.S. or foreign passport with all applicable visas and documentation current through at least December 31, 2026. Candidates must possess the necessary documentation to legally work and travel as a Flight Attendant within the U.S. and internationally.
- Must possess the unrestricted legal right to work within the United States and the ability to travel unrestricted to all countries served by American Airlines.
- Must be willing and able to relocate based on the company’s operational needs. Potential base locations include BOS, CLT, DCA, DFW, LGA, LAX, MIA, ORD, PHL, or PHX.
- Must be available to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required.
- Must accept assignment to on-call (reserve) duty at the assigned base for an undetermined period of years.
- Must adhere strictly to professional appearance guidelines while in uniform:
- No visible tattoos are permitted.
- A maximum of one (1) earring per ear is allowed.
- No facial piercings are permitted.
