Position Summary
The primary function of a Hawaiian Airlines Flight Attendant is to ensure the safety of guests aboard Company aircraft. This requires being physically and psychologically capable of performing safety procedures and assisting guests during emergencies. Flight Attendants operate in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, handling emergency situations and interacting with diverse personalities in an attentive and pleasant manner.
Secondarily, Flight Attendants provide consistent and prescribed levels of customer service within the aircraft cabin during flight, including food and beverage service, while delivering an unsurpassed Aloha experience.
Key Responsibilities
A Flight Attendant performs a variety of essential duties, including but not limited to:
- Attending preflight briefings covering weather, altitudes, routes, emergency procedures, crew coordination, flight durations, food and beverage services, and guest numbers.
- Greeting guests pleasantly, directing them to seats, and answering flight-related questions.
- Assisting guests with stowing carry-on luggage in overhead compartments or under seats.
- Demonstrating the use of safety equipment (e.g., seat belts, oxygen masks, life jackets) and emergency procedures before take-off.
- Monitoring aisles to ensure guest observation of safety regulations, advising guests of safety infractions, and effectively diffusing/resolving difficult guest situations.
- Directing and assisting guests during emergency procedures, such as aircraft evacuation.
- Providing food and beverage service consistently according to procedure.
- Collecting and reconciling payments for onboard products (alcoholic beverages, meals, duty-free sales, etc.).
- Administering first aid as necessary.
- Preparing written and verbal reports of emergency or safety incidents during flight.
- Preparing guests and the aircraft for landing following procedures.
- Satisfactorily completing annual FAA-approved re-certification provided by Hawaiian Airlines.
- Obtaining and maintaining an Airport Operations Area (AOA) Badge.
- Learning and maintaining current knowledge and competency in emergency procedures in accordance with Hawaiian Airlines and FAA regulations.
- Working alternative schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Interacting effectively and professionally with colleagues and guests.
- Collaborating effectively with colleagues to deliver an exceptional aloha experience by providing prompt and pleasant responses to guest inquiries, requests, and complaints.
- Identifying potential problems and escalating concerns appropriately.
- Working in varying climates and locations globally and on variable shifts.
- Flying at high altitudes.
- Meeting the physical demands of the job.
- Assisting ill or incapacitated passengers and fellow crew members.
- Evacuating the aircraft in heavy, dense smoke during a cabin fire.
- Handling and operating oxygen bottles and fire extinguishers.
- Removing and lifting emergency cabin windows (weighing up to 60 pounds).
- Jumping down the emergency slide from a height of approximately 24.5 feet.
All outlined job duties, including emergency duties, are essential functions of the Flight Attendant position.
Minimum Requirements
Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Must be 21 years old at the time of application.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Present a professional image; visible body art (including tattoos), facial, multiple or upper ear piercings, gauge piercings, or extreme hair color or style are not permitted while in Flight Attendant Uniform or in public areas.
- Demonstrate strong customer service skills and the ability to effectively diffuse and resolve difficult customer situations.
- Be able to read, write, and speak English proficiently.
- Successfully complete an FAA-approved, unpaid eight-week intensive training program provided by Hawaiian Airlines.
- Be able to relocate within the state of Hawaii or the continental U.S.
- Be available to work alternative schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Possess the ability to reach 82 inches vertically.
- Be able to sit in a cabin crew jump seat with seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened.
- Successfully complete pre-employment requirements: Drug Test, tuberculosis (TB) screening, and background check.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer, without sponsorship. Hawaiian Airlines will not sponsor applicants for nonimmigrant or immigrant employment visas or status for this position.
- Possess a valid passport and be able to secure applicable visas for travel to countries served by Hawaiian Airlines. Travel documents must remain valid throughout all phases of training and employment.
- Possess the legal right to travel from all countries served by Hawaiian Airlines.
- Must be able to work in an environment subject to varying climatic conditions, variable positive and negative gravitational loads induced by turbulence, and varying levels of cabin pressurization. Flight Attendants are required to stand for up to four to seventeen hours, which may involve stooping, twisting, and pulling/pushing cabin equipment.
- (For current employees) Must be in good standing with the company.
Hawaiian Airlines is regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT - regulation, 49 CFR part 40), and all applicants are advised that post-offer and/or pre-employment drug testing will be conducted to determine the presence of Marijuana, Cocaine, Opioids, PCP (Phencyclidine), and Amphetamine prior to any offer of employment or transfer into a safety-sensitive position. Failure to submit to testing or positive indications of drug use will render the applicant ineligible for employment with Hawaiian Airlines, and any employment offer will be withdrawn.
In addition to routine employment eligibility verification, U.S.-based airlines must gather information to validate country of citizenship and country of birth. Upon hire, documentation proving current country citizenship and birthplace is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of direct customer experience in the hospitality or airline industry.
- Four years of customer contact and customer service issue resolution with the general public in industries such as retail, education, health care, and/or professional services.
- College education or degree.
