Purpose of Position

The Courseware Author/Subject Matter Expert – Pilot is responsible for the authoring and technical accuracy of original content training materials and courseware using the Instructional System Development (ISD) process and for production of complex training materials using program guidelines. The incumbent is also responsible for providing content support and consulting to the members of the courseware development team, corporate proposal team, engineers, and program managers.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Works with assigned teammates to develop training products through a process that includes review and research of government furnished materials (GFM) and other resources.
  • Interprets, and makes deductions from multiple sources of inputs to develop tailored complex courseware for unique and advanced national security applications.
  • Prepares task lists, validates learning objectives, locates and extracts data from technical documents, and provides input to teammates on technical subject matter.
  • Designs and develops training materials for delivery in a state-of-the-art learning environment, including computer-based and instructor-based training, interactive classrooms, mobile applications, and aircrew training devices.
  • Interprets manufacturer specifications, documents and associated technical documents to develop training content.
  • Authors original courseware documents and training materials using computerized database, word processing, and computer- and web-based training authoring tools.
  • Revises courseware documents and training materials based on technical reviews by peer authors, SMEs, management, quality assurance, and customers.
  • Applies ISD standards for documents and training materials design, format, word usage, and writing style.
  • Reviews proposed changes to aircraft equipment and requirements and forecasts changes required to training systems and courseware.
  • Interprets instructions and assumes responsibility for accuracy and completeness of work produced.
  • Supports the conduct of academic and device training for Initial and Small Group Try Outs (ITO/SGTO) as needed.
  • Works with other team members and the customer to validate technical content of training materials.
  • Travels as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate discipline.

Minimum Experience

  • Experience as a military aircrew member (Pilot) is required.
  • Military aircrew instructor experience is desired.
  • Commercial airline aircrew experience with instructor experience may be substituted.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Read, write and speak fluent English.
  • Knowledge of the complete ISD process.
  • Training content development/SME experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Works independently or with others.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a dynamic work environment.
  • Exercises professional judgment and discretion; and assumes responsibility for accuracy and completeness of work.
  • In-depth knowledge of flight/aircrew training.
  • Aircrew experience.
  • Solid knowledge of computers, Microsoft Windows and Office software.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the teammate is regularly required to sit, use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • The teammate must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • The teammate must have close and distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
