Griffon Aerospace is a premier provider of advanced unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), serving the Department of Defense and global partners since 1995. We are currently seeking a highly skilled External Pilot to support our Group 3 UAS program, contributing to the development and operation of mission-critical aerial systems.
Position Summary
The External Pilot is responsible for the manual operation of unmanned aircraft during critical flight phases, including takeoff, cruise, landing, and emergency procedures, utilizing handheld control systems. The successful candidate will possess extensive experience with large-scale UAS platforms and demonstrate exceptional situational awareness and precision control within a demanding military flight test environment.
Key Responsibilities

Serve as External Pilot for unmanned aircraft systems weighing 250+ pounds.

Execute manual control of the aircraft during all critical flight phases.

Collaborate with internal pilots, mission commanders, and ground control station operators.

Participate in pre-flight and post-flight briefings.

Assist in the development of flight test plans, standard operating procedures, checklists, and training programs.

Provide technical input for aircraft control system modifications and improvements.

Perform aircraft maintenance, repairs, and system troubleshooting.

Document and report flight performance data, system anomalies, and operational issues.

Ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols, operational procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Support field operations in diverse domestic and international environments.
Required Qualifications

Minimum of 3 years of experience as an External Pilot for Group 3 or larger UAS (250+ pounds).

Advanced proficiency in manual flight operations via hand controller or radio transmitter.

Documented experience with fixed-wing platforms.

Strong foundational knowledge of aerodynamics, flight control systems, and UAS operations.

Demonstrated ability to maintain precise control in varying weather conditions.

Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to various test sites.

Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certificate.

FAA Class II medical certificate (or ability to qualify).

U.S. citizenship (required for security clearance eligibility).
Preferred Qualifications

Experience with military UAS programs, specifically U.S. Army aviation systems.

Background in flight testing or developmental aircraft programs.

Experience tuning autopilot flight controls.

In-depth knowledge of Army aviation procedures, tactical operations, and FAA regulations.

Prior military aviation experience.

Experience with simulator training systems and mechanical/electrical troubleshooting.
Physical Requirements

Visual acuity sufficient to maintain visual line of sight with aircraft at extended distances.

Ability to stand for extended periods during flight operations.

Capability to work in diverse outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of equipment.
Work Environment and Travel
This role involves a combination of office, laboratory, and field environments. The position requires 30-50% travel to test sites and customer locations, with the potential for deployment to domestic and overseas military installations.
Clearance Requirements
The candidate must be a U.S. citizen and possess the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
