General
This position offers a minimum guarantee of seventy-two (72) hours per month. The Captain reports directly to the Chief Pilot. The successful candidate must be type-rated on multi-engine aircraft. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a B-737 type rating and a first-class medical certificate. A thorough knowledge and understanding of all relevant Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) is essential. The Captain must possess strong communication skills and demonstrate the company's values and culture while collaborating with team members and interacting with customers in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Captain holds command of, and responsibility for, the flight crew, passengers, and cargo, ensuring the safe conduct of each flight. This role involves providing guidance and coordinating the activities of every individual connected with all phases of the aircraft operation. The Captain is expected to adhere strictly to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and will evaluate input from all crew members when making critical decisions.
Eastern Air Express strongly promotes the exercise of Crew Resource Management (CRM). While the Captain is the final authority onboard the aircraft, the First Officer is encouraged to voice any concerns regarding the Captain's decisions, particularly on flight safety matters, and will continue voicing concerns until satisfied that the safety of a flight is no longer in question.
Reporting to the Chief Pilot and indirectly to the Director of Operations, the Captain must maintain a high level of knowledge regarding FAA Regulations, Company Manuals, OpSpecs, Aircraft Flight Manuals, and other duty-based instructions. Key duties and responsibilities include:
- Serving as the final authority for the safe operation of the aircraft.
- Directing the activities of the First Officer, ensuring complete understanding of expected duties.
- Ensuring the assigned aircraft is airworthy and all proper documents are onboard.
- Making necessary decisions to start, delay, or initiate the cancellation of a flight, or deviate from a planned destination when operating conditions dictate.
- Ensuring the proper amount and grade of fuel is loaded onto the aircraft.
- Obtaining a briefing on the purpose of the flight, weather, operating procedures, and any special instructions, and coordinating flight assignments.
- Conducting a thorough review of the flight plan, considering factors such as altitude, terrain, weather, range, weight, airport facilities, and navigational aids.
- Providing immediate notification to the SOC of any deviation from the flight plan, including a detailed description (date, time, location, aircraft number, Captain name, etc.) and the reason for the deviation.
- Ensuring weather and aircraft performance conditions meet the requirements appropriate to the CFR under which the flight is being conducted.
- Ensuring the flight plan or other authorized flight locating procedure is followed on each flight.
- Ensuring the aircraft weight and balance form/manifest is properly completed, signed, and distributed.
- Reporting all known or suspected FAA violations or incidents promptly to the Chief Pilot, Director of Operations, or designee.
- Maintaining a current First-Class medical certificate and notifying the Director of Operations, Chief Pilot, or designee if a medical condition (physical or mental) impairs the ability to perform the flight.
- Ensuring VHR Omni directional Range (VOR) checks and other aircraft equipment checks are performed properly.
- Ensuring crew members provide all passengers with the appropriate briefing for each phase of flight.
- Ensuring required equipment plus provisions for passenger comfort are aboard and that all cargo is properly secured.
- Ensuring the preparation of flight logs, reporting of mechanical irregularities, and the recording of maintenance performed by maintenance personnel.
- Ensuring all maintenance write-ups are passed to maintenance personnel and that maintenance is alerted to the current status of the aircraft.
- Determining the applicability of regulations to each flight.
- Ensuring all required Aircraft and Pilot manuals are available and updated to the current revision (hardcopy or EFB).
- Determining the flight crew is adequately rested and in proper dress.
- Ensuring the aircraft is clean and prepared for flight with all aircraft stores and appropriate provisions onboard for the safety and comfort of passengers and crew.
- Operating the aircraft at favorable altitudes considering turbulence, oxygen requirements, and passenger comfort during flight.
- Entering flight and duty time into the Company’s computer tracking system or coordinating with the Aircraft Dispatcher at the end of each flight day.
- Maintaining radio or telephone contact with the SOC frequently enough during the course of a flight to ensure operational messages are promptly conveyed between the flight crew and base.
- While the Captain may delegate functions to other personnel, this does not delegate the responsibility for those functions.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 7000 hours total flying time, with time counted only from the operating seat of a turboprop and/or turbojet aircraft.
- Minimum of 2000 hours Pilot in Command (PIC) time on multi-crew, multi-engine, commercial aircraft.
- Previous experience must include wide-body aircraft PIC time, preferably on the B767 or B777.
- Valid FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) License.
- Valid FAA First Class Medical Certificate.
- Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- English proficiency consistent with at least ICAO Level 4 endorsement.
- Passport allowing worldwide travel.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Impeccable safety and training record.
- Minimum of 1,000 hours of flight time under Part 121 operations.
- Ability to multitask and work effectively under pressure in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to bid work schedule by seniority (days, swings, midnight shifts, and holidays).
- Travel is required.
- Ability to pass a drug and alcohol background check, pre-employment DOT drug test, and Criminal History Records Check (CHRC).
- Must possess a valid U.S. Passport.
- Eligibility to work in the United States (US Passport or Green Card holder).
- Candidates considered for a Direct Entry Captain position must meet FAR 121.436.
Location
As a Captain, this position is considered Home-Based.
- The Captain may reside anywhere within the continental 48 states east of Denver, including the cities of Denver and Colorado Springs.
- A home airport must be designated within 2 hours of surface travel from the Captain's residence.
- The designated home airport must be served by two major airlines (Delta, American, United, or Southwest), with each airline providing a minimum of 3 flights per day. Flights on regional feeder airlines ticketed under the major airline's name (e.g., Envoy or Piedmont under AA) are acceptable towards the minimum flight count. Should the airport lose sufficient frequency, the Captain may be asked to relocate their home base to an airport meeting these criteria.
- Travel arrangements provided by the company will commence and conclude solely at the designated home base airport.
- The home-based assignment is provided at the time of hire. Changes to the designated home base are limited to a maximum of once every 6 months. Requests for a change must be submitted to Human Resources at least 30 days in advance of the desired effective date and are subject to review and approval based on location and airport suitability.
- The Captain is responsible for all parking and ground transportation expenses associated with their home base.
