BFT Instructor Pilot - CAE
About the Role
The BFT Instructor Pilot plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the RCAF, contributing to a dynamic and engaging learning environment for aspiring pilots. Working alongside a team of military-trained instructor pilots, this position offers the opportunity to deliver high-quality training on the G120TP trainer aircraft.
Pre-Training Responsibilities
Prior to the commencement of training, the BFT Instructor Pilot will be actively involved in establishing the foundational pilot training system, collaborating closely with a team of BFT CQFIs. This includes:
- Aircraft Type Conversion Training: Successfully transitioning to and mastering the G120TP aircraft.
- Courseware Development: Contributing to the design and development of comprehensive training materials, encompassing classroom-based, synthetic training device-based, and live flying training sequences.
- Testing and Validation: Participating in the acceptance testing of all training components, including courseware, synthetic training devices, and aircraft.
- Integrated Training Centre Establishment: Supporting the creation of a cohesive training environment through the development of policy and procedure documents.
- Information Management System Integration: Assisting in the integration and testing of various Information Management systems (e.g., Learning).
- Synthetic and Air Lesson Plan Testing: Thoroughly testing lesson plans for both synthetic training devices and the G120TP air lesson plans (ALPs).
Instructor Pilot Responsibilities
Once steady state training commences, the BFT Instructor Pilot assumes the vital responsibility of maintaining an instructional category as a CQFI, encompassing the following tasks:
- Delivery of Training: Providing comprehensive instruction across various learning environments, including the classroom, synthetic training devices, and the G120TP aircraft.
- Flying Proficiency: Maintaining the highest levels of flying proficiency, category, and currency in accordance with applicable regulations (B-GA-100, RCAF FOM, 2 CFFTS Orders and CQFI SOW).
- Instructional Sorties: Executing instructional sorties in strict adherence to RCAF instructional doctrine.
- Mission Proficiency: Demonstrating mastery of all missions outlined in the BFT syllabus, including cross country and out and back missions.
- Student Monitoring: Assisting the flight commander in ensuring the continuous development and progress of assigned students.
- Instructional Presentations: Preparing and conducting presentations/briefings on instructional topics, including A Category ground school as applicable.
- Flight Safety Adherence: Upholding the highest standards of flight safety through adherence to the CAF Flight Safety program and protocols (A-GA-135-001/AA-001 - Flight Safety for the Canadian Armed Forces manual).
- Procedural Support: Providing expert support to the customer by writing, maintaining, and reviewing procedures, manuals, and other documents as required.
- Subject Matter Expertise: Acting as a subject matter expert for OA and TA organizations both internally and externally.
- Courseware Review and Improvement: Participating in routine, periodic reviews of courseware and procedures, contributing to the ongoing improvement and maintenance of training materials.
- Maintenance Test Pilot Duties: Potentially assigned to perform Maintenance Test Pilot duties as needed.
Instructor Qualification
The BFT Instructor Pilot must be qualified to provide comprehensive instruction across a range of flight scenarios, including Clearhood, Instrument, Navigation, Formation, and Composite missions, as outlined in the appropriate training program. Additionally, they may be required to work in Standards, conduct staff development, and/or deliver QFI training based on demonstrated performance.
Currency Requirements
The BFT Instructor Pilot is accountable for maintaining RCAF currency and proficiency requirements, including:
- Aeromedical Training IAW CADO 5-301
- Spatial Disorientation Training
- Centrifuge Training
- Escape Systems/Ground Egress Training
- ALSE Training
- Sea Survival Training
- Air Operations Survival - Land
- Servicing Training for Cross-Country Flights
- Certification with St John's Ambulance in first aid training including CPR and AED
- Fire prevention and fire extinguisher training every four years
Candidate Requirements
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
For candidates with NO prior military experience:
- A minimum of 500 hours of flying time in a single pilot, high performance aeroplane.
- A Transport Canada (TC) commercial pilot's license.
- A TC instructor rating.
For instructor pilots WITH prior military experience:
- Demonstration of military experience with an acceptable Prior Learning Assessment Requirement completed.
Additional Requirements for All Candidates:
- Fluency in English in regards to reading, writing, and oral communication.
- Military or professional flying experience within the last 10 years.
- Maintenance of an unrestricted TC category 1 medical and any additional medical exams as required by the RCAF.
- Body weight and anthropometric measurements must be within the limits of the aircraft to be flown.
Desired Qualifications/Experience
The following are preferred qualifications:
- Previous NFTC QFI or Grob G120TP QFI experience.
- Previous flying supervisory / military flight leadership experience.
- Flight lead experience in a trainer or fighter aircraft.
- Experience in military instruction.
- RCAF Aerospace Warfare Centre (RAWC) Operational Test and Evaluation Course (or RCAF-recognized equivalent qualification).
- Verbal French skills.
Security Requirements
The candidate must successfully pass a security evaluation per the requirements of the Controlled Goods Directorate of Canada. CAE must also be able to obtain all necessary re-transfer authorization in compliance with US ITAR regulations.
