DHC-8 Instructor Pilot / Check Pilot (IP/CP)
Purpose of the Role
The DHC-8 Instructor Pilot / Check Pilot (IP/CP) serves as a highly qualified aviation professional responsible for delivering comprehensive ground, flight simulator, and aircraft instruction. This pivotal role encompasses essential training and testing in strict adherence to 14 CFR Part 135 regulations, company Operations Specifications, and the established pilot training program requirements. The IP/CP is instrumental in conducting rigorous training and evaluations for pilot, instructor, and check pilot candidates, while also collaborating closely with the Chief Pilot and Director of Training on all matters pertaining to DHC-8 operating procedures, training methodologies, and testing protocols.
The successful candidate will maintain current Pilot In Command (PIC), Instructor Pilot (IP), and Check Pilot (CP) qualifications in the DHC-8 aircraft, including proficiency in any special mission capabilities integral to DHC-8 flight operations. This position requires availability to function as Pilot In Command for both revenue and non-revenue flight operations, domestically and internationally, as operational needs dictate.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides expert ground and flight training, alongside ongoing mentorship, for Instructor Pilot and Check Pilot candidates during their initial qualification, recurrent, and requalification curriculums and modules, in strict accordance with the company’s DHC-8 Pilot Training Program.
- Delivers classroom and flight instruction, and administers pilot testing, for specialized operations and special mission capabilities, including but not limited to Radar Approaches, Night Vision Goggle (NVG) operations, and Aerial Delivery procedures.
- Conducts classroom instruction covering both aircraft-specific and non-aircraft-specific subjects, extending to pilots not assigned to the incumbent’s primary aircraft type(s).
- Offers comprehensive pilot flight instruction utilizing flight training devices, advanced simulators, and DHC-8 aircraft, as assigned.
- Administers thorough oral, written, and practical examinations to pilots, ensuring full compliance with applicable Federal Aviation Regulations (CFRs), Operations Specifications (OpSpecs), the company training program, and established testing standards.
- Ensures the timely and accurate completion of all required documentation following training and testing activities.
- Supports the Director of Training (DOT) by actively assisting in the research, evaluation, and implementation of new or revised training systems, policies, procedures, and techniques.
- Facilitates standardization across operational areas and topics, serving as a vital liaison between the Chief Pilot and the Director of Training.
- Acts as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and liaison between line-of-business and field units and the DOT, for the validation and verification of training programs and protocols.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Training to support departmental and organizational objectives.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Possession of a valid Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (ATP) with an Airplane Multi-engine Land (AMEL) rating.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Class I Medical Certificate.
- Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs).
- Proven leadership abilities, exceptional interpersonal skills, and a consistently professional demeanor.
- Must possess a valid U.S. Passport.
- Ability to acquire and maintain, or currently hold, an active Secret Clearance or higher.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Current DHC-8 Type Rating.
- Prior experience as a flight or simulator instructor pilot under 14 CFR Part 121, 135, or 142, or equivalent military experience.
- Prior experience as a flight or simulator check pilot under 14 CFR Part 121, 135, or 142, or equivalent military experience.
- Previous experience in Night Vision Goggle (NVG) operations and aerial delivery procedures.
- Preferred proximity to San Marcos Regional Airport (KHYI) or Concord-Padgett Regional Airport (KJQF).
- Proficiency with standard office suite computer programs.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Capacity to perform assigned pilot duties requiring confined sitting for up to 10 flight hours per day.
- Willingness to be exposed to a wide variety of environmental and weather conditions while working outdoors, including extreme heat, cold, and adverse weather.
- Ability to travel extensively to accomplish training and job duties, both domestically and internationally.
- Readiness to work in diverse environments, including indoor, outdoor, and austere operating conditions within potentially hostile areas of operation that may present threats from enemy combatants, both airborne and ground-based.
