Amentum | B737 First Officer

Las Vegas, United States

First Officer - B737

This position involves piloting B737 aircraft to facilitate the transportation of passengers and cargo. The First Officer serves as Second in Command, assuming responsibility for the aircraft's operation should the Pilot in Command become incapacitated. In addition to flight duties, the First Officer diligently monitors all aspects of flight to ensure safety and verifies normal functionality of all aircraft systems. They maintain clear communication with Air Traffic Control using standard aviation terminology. A thorough review of maintenance logs, weather reports/forecasts, and Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) is required. The First Officer must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), the Airman Information Manual (AIM), the company's Flight Operations Manual (FOM), the aircraft manufacturer's Flight Crew Operations Manual (FCOM), the Flight Crew Training Manual (FCTM), and the Quick Reference Handbook (QRH). Calculating Performance Data and Weight & Balance of the aircraft is also a critical responsibility.

The work environment is primarily within the cockpit of a B737, a confined space subject to high noise levels, fluctuating temperatures, and low humidity. The First Officer may experience physical and mental stress resulting from in-flight emergencies, adverse weather conditions, significant noise exposure, and other environmental challenges. The role is predominantly sedentary, involving some walking, bending, stretching, climbing, and manipulating controls from a seated posture. Physical demands include the capability to exert 40 pounds of arm/shoulder strength for steering wheel manipulation, 100 pounds for yoke operation, and 130 pounds of leg strength for rudder pedal actuation. The position also requires lifting up to 30 pounds in various arm/shoulder positions. Visual acuity must be 20/20 at near, mid, and far ranges, with full color recognition. Furthermore, the ability to hear, interpret, and respond to conversations in English amidst typical office background noise is essential.

The First Officer must maintain personal composure and focus on job tasks, as even routine flight operations demand a high degree of concentration and recall. This includes the ability to perform complex mental math in real-time, remember and initiate checklists at designated points, maintain situational awareness, and choose the most appropriate course of action from multiple options. The role can involve periods of intense stress due to conditions such as mechanical failures, inclement weather, low fuel, loss of pressurization, in-flight fire, or potential collisions. During these critical moments, the First Officer must be able to assess options, prioritize tasks, and take necessary action without succumbing to fear or sensory overload.
