Position Overview
The Lead Pilot - Rotary plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of rotary-wing aircraft. This position involves comprehensive oversight of flight operations, crew training, and adherence to all regulatory standards. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional leadership, technical proficiency, and a commitment to aviation safety, contributing significantly to flight operational excellence and crew development.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
The Lead Pilot - Rotary will be responsible for a broad range of critical functions, including:
- Operating aircraft safely and in strict adherence to Transport Canada regulations, YRP policies and procedures, and all relevant aircraft flight manuals.
- Developing, maintaining, and implementing essential flight documentation, including operations manuals, standard operating procedures (SOPs), training manuals, and the Safety Management System (SMS) manual.
- Designing and implementing all required approved training programs for the air operator's flight crews.
- Conducting comprehensive ground, synthetic flight training device, and flight training for all flight crew members, ensuring compliance with approved training programs.
- Collaborating closely with the Maintenance Manager to foster and promote safe aircraft operation practices.
- Supervising and recommending amendments to respective aircraft operating manuals and standard operating procedures to maintain the highest standards.
- Ensuring clear and effective communication with Tactical Flight Officers (TFOs) to facilitate seamless flight operations.
- Communicating professionally with Air Traffic Control and other aircraft to obtain necessary flight clearances.
- Performing thorough pre-flight aircraft walk-around checks to identify and address potential defects, ensuring airworthiness. This includes conducting detailed pre-flight and post-flight inspections of fuel and equipment.
- Maintaining the professional standards of all flight crew under their supervision.
- Providing direct supervision to all Line Rotary Pilots.
- Managing crew schedules and coordinating call-outs for overtime as required.
- Assuming any responsibilities delegated by the Operations Manager.
- Issuing necessary directives and notices to flight crews.
- Assisting the Operations Manager with all facets of flight operations, including forecasting budget costs.
- Supporting the Operations Manager in the hiring, assessment, and training of new pilots.
- Actioning and distributing accident, incident, and other occurrence reports efficiently.
- Liaising effectively with crew scheduling regarding training details.
- Maintaining strict confidentiality of all sensitive information.
Education, Licensing & Certifications
Candidates must possess the following mandatory qualifications:
- A valid Transport Canada Commercial Pilot Licence (H).
- A valid Transport Canada Category 1 medical certificate.
- A restricted radio telephone operator's certificate.
Mandatory Experience
Applicants are required to demonstrate the following experience:
- A minimum of five (5) years of previous flight experience, including 1000 hours of flying time on a rotary-wing aircraft, with 100 of those hours accrued as "Pilot in Command."
- 100 hours of documented night flying time.
- A clean record with no violations or insured losses within the preceding five (5) years.
Preferred Experience
Highly desirable experience for this role includes:
- Previous supervisory experience within an aviation setting.
- 100 or more hours of piloting an Airbus H125 within the previous 12 months.
- 250 or more hours of flying time on a turbine engine rotary aircraft.
