Role Proficiencies and Responsibilities

The primary mission of a Flight Attendant is to ensure the highest levels of safety and service for every customer. Key responsibilities include:

  • Safety Leadership: Maintaining rigorous safety protocols and responding effectively to high-stress situations, including medical emergencies, security threats, and aircraft evacuations.
  • Customer Engagement: Providing compassionate and professional service to influence customer loyalty and resolve issues with grace.
  • Operational Reliability: Demonstrating dependability and timeliness to support a 24/7 global operation, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Team Collaboration: Working effectively both independently and as part of a cohesive inflight crew.
  • Service Delivery: Managing the professional sale and service of food and beverages, including alcohol.

Training and Onboarding

New hires undergo a premier 6.5-week Initial Training program in Houston, TX. Highlights include:

  • Assignment to one of United’s hubs (Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, Washington Dulles, or other base locations).

Candidate Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria at the time of application:

  • Age and Education: Must be at least 21 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED (two or more years of college preferred).
  • Experience: At least one year of customer service experience in industries such as retail, hospitality, aviation, or education.
  • Communication: Fluent in English (speaking, reading, writing, and understanding). Proficiency in a second language is highly desirable, specifically Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, or Tagalog.
  • Legal and Documentation: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and possess a valid U.S. or foreign passport with at least 12 months of validity and two blank pages.
  • Travel Eligibility: Ability to travel unrestricted to all countries served by United, including meeting strict entry requirements for locations such as Canada (regarding DWI/DUI history).
  • Physical Capabilities:
    • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, and lift heavy objects.
    • Ability to push/pull beverage carts weighing up to 250 lbs.
    • Successful completion of a functional reach assessment (76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach).
    • Ability to pass FAA-mandated vision and hearing tests and a water evacuation drill.
  • Grooming and Appearance: Compliance with professional uniform standards. Tattoos are prohibited on the head, neck, or hands. Visible tattoos on limbs must be smaller than 3.5" x 2.24" and non-offensive. No decorative dental adornments are permitted.
  • Compliance: Must pass a DOT/FAA pre-employment drug screen (including testing for marijuana) and a 10-year criminal background check.
