C-17 Pilot Instructor

Purpose of Position:
The C-17 Pilot Instructor is responsible for delivering ground-based instruction to C-17 pilots. He/She will instruct and evaluate the progress of crewmembers within the established Training System (TS) curriculum.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Conducts training utilizing devices such as the Weapon System Trainer (WST), the C-17 aircraft, Computer-Based Trainers (CBT), and other ground training resources for all C-17 TS pilots in air drop, aerial refueling/transport operating procedures. This includes diagnosing and remediating student challenges.
- Maintains a high level of subject matter expertise, instructional proficiency, and overall professional knowledge.
- Conducts thorough briefings and debriefings, providing counsel to pilots and Maintenance Engine Run personnel to foster and maintain a high level of proficiency.
- Performs administrative duties related to training, including interfacing with user organizations, maintaining records, monitoring student progress, providing counseling, and developing and maintaining training programs.
- Provides input for courseware corrections and modifications, and updates training policies and procedures as needed.
- Operates the WST (as required) to sustain instructional expertise.
- Participates in flight operations on the aircraft (as required) in an observer capacity to stay current on operational procedures and evaluate student progress.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serves as a C-17 Pilot Subject Matter Expert (SME) for students, other personnel, and test events, as required.
- Serves as Flight Check Airman (FCA) (Lead), when assigned.
- Serves as Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Evaluator, when assigned.
- Performs Simulator Certification (SIMCERT)/Simulator Evaluation (SIMVAL) duties when assigned.
- Assists in project and development work, as assigned.
- Attends Operations Group Standardization/Evaluation (Stan/Eval) Boards (SEB) and Training Review Panels (TRP), as well as Formal Training Unit (FTU) instructor meetings (when FCA is unavailable).
- Attends Headquarters (HQ) Air Mobility Command (AMC) curriculum reviews, HQ AMC Stan/Eval Conferences, and/or Flight Manual Review Conferences (FMRC), as required (when FCA is unavailable).
- Performs Learning Center monitor duties, as assigned.
- Performs safety representative duties, as designated/assigned.
- Performs physical/cyber security representative duties, as assigned.
- Performs hazardous materials (HAZMAT) duties, as designated/assigned.
- Travels, as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s degree required.
Minimum Experience:
Eight (8) years of flying experience, with five (5) years as a C-17 pilot with air drop and aerial refueling experience, or ability to obtain an AMC/A3TK waiver.
Two (2) years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience in air drop, aerial refueling, and tactics.
Recent C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor experience and CATS MECOC certification are desired.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Fluent in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
- Ability to clearly and effectively communicate information verbally and in writing.
- Ability to present information effectively and respond to customer inquiries.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Working knowledge of instructional principles and theories pertaining to Training Systems (TSs).
- Working knowledge of personal computers and software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
- Successful completion of annual internal standardization evaluations.
- Possession of an active SECRET Security Clearance.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This role requires the ability to talk, hear, sit, stand, walk, and use hands to operate controls. The individual may be required to reach, stoop, kneel, and ingress/egress from the simulator and aircraft. Work may be performed in inclement weather and temperature extremes. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 35 pounds occasionally. Noise levels can range from quiet to extremely loud. The employee must be able to exit the WST via an escape ladder to the floor.
