Position Summary

FlightSafety International seeks a highly qualified and experienced C-17 Pilot Instructor to join its esteemed team. This critical role is responsible for the comprehensive ground-based training of C-17 pilots, encompassing instruction, mentorship, and the meticulous measurement of training progress within the established Training System (TS) curriculum. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in developing and maintaining the highest levels of pilot proficiency for mission-critical operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive C-17 pilot training utilizing advanced devices such as the Weapon System Trainer (WST), C-17 aircraft, and Computer-Based Trainers (CBT), covering air drop, aerial refueling/transport operating procedures, alongside diagnosing and remediating student challenges.
  • Maintain exceptional levels of subject matter expertise, instructional capability, and professional knowledge.
  • Lead insightful briefings and debriefings, providing constructive counsel to pilots and Maintenance Engine Run personnel to foster and sustain high proficiency standards.
  • Perform essential administrative duties related to training, including effective liaison with user organizations, meticulous record-keeping, monitoring student advancement, counseling, contributing to training development, and upholding training program integrity.
  • Provide valuable inputs for courseware corrections, modifications, and updates to training policies and procedures.
  • Operate the Weapon System Trainer (WST) as required to sustain and enhance instructional expertise.
  • Conduct observer flights on the C-17 aircraft as necessary to maintain currency on operational procedures and assess student progress in real-world environments.
  • Serve as a C-17 Pilot Subject Matter Expert (SME) for students, personnel, and during test events.
  • Assume the role of Flight Check Airman (FCA)(Lead), Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Evaluator, and accomplish Simulator Certification (SIMCERT)/Simulator Evaluation (SIMVAL) duties when assigned.
  • Assist in project and development work as directed.
  • Periodically attend Operations Group Standardization/Evaluation (Stan/Eval) Boards (SEB) and Training Review Panels (TRP), as well as Formal Training Unit (FTU) instructor meetings (when FCA is unavailable).
  • Attend Headquarters (HQ) Air Mobility Command (AMC) curriculum reviews, HQ AMC Stan/Eval Conferences, and/or Flight Manual Review Conferences (FMRC) as required (when FCA is unavailable).
  • Undertake Learning Center monitor, safety representative, physical/cyber security representative, and hazardous materials (HAZMAT) duties as designated or assigned.
  • Undertake other duties and travel as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required.

Experience

  • Eight (8) years of flying experience, including five (5) years as a C-17 pilot with demonstrated expertise in air drop and aerial refueling, or possession of an AMC/A3TK waiver.
  • A minimum of two (2) years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience specifically in air drop, aerial refueling, and tactical operations.
  • Recent C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor experience and CATS MECOC certification are highly desired.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Fluent proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
  • Exceptional ability to relay information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated capability to effectively present information and address customer inquiries.
  • Working knowledge of instructional principles and theories pertinent to Training Systems (TSs).
  • Proficiency in personal computer operation and standard software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Successful accomplishment of annual internal standardization evaluations.
  • Possession of an active SECRET Security Clearance.

Equipment Proficiency

  • Experience with C-17 WST, C-17 Aircraft, CBT Systems, classroom presentation equipment, and Training Management System / Graduate Training Management Information System (GTIMS).

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The C-17 Pilot Instructor will operate in a dynamic training environment. This role frequently requires sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, and utilizing hands for manipulation of controls. Occasional reaching with hands and arms, stooping, or kneeling may be necessary. Frequent ingress/egress from simulators and aircraft is required, along with potential exposure to inclement weather and temperature extremes in accordance with Air Force and company guidelines. The ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 35 pounds, is essential. Noise levels can vary from quiet to extremely loud. Candidates must be capable of safely exiting the Weapon System Trainer (WST) via an escape ladder down to the floor.
