The Pilot Instructor is primarily responsible for delivering high-quality ground-based training to C-17 pilots. This critical role involves instructing crewmembers and meticulously measuring their training progress within the established Training System (TS) curriculum.
The Pilot Instructor will perform a diverse range of duties, including:
A Bachelor's degree is a mandatory requirement for this position.
Candidates must possess a minimum of eight (8) years of flying experience, including at least five (5) years as a C-17 pilot with proven expertise in air drop and aerial refueling operations, or the ability to secure an AMC/A3TK waiver. Additionally, two (2) years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience in air drop, aerial refueling, and tactical operations are essential. Recent C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor experience and CATS MECOC certification are highly desirable.
The role requires proficiency in operating the C-17 Weapon System Trainer (WST), C-17 aircraft, and Computer-Based Training (CBT) systems. Familiarity with classroom presentation equipment, Training Management Systems (such as GTIMS), and standard office software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint is also necessary.

The role demands a range of physical capabilities essential for successful performance. Instructors are regularly required to engage in communication (talking/hearing), periods of sitting, standing, and walking, and fine motor skills for handling objects and controls. Occasional reaching, stooping, and kneeling may be necessary. Frequent ingress and egress from simulators and aircraft are required, often in varying weather conditions and temperature extremes, adhering to Air Force and company guidelines. The ability to frequently lift and move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 35 pounds, is also essential. The work environment can range from quiet to extremely loud. A critical requirement includes the ability to exit the Weapon System Trainer (WST) via an escape ladder to the floor.
