Purpose of Position
The C-17 Pilot Instructor plays a pivotal role in the execution of ground-based training for C-17 pilots, encompassing instruction, mentorship, and the evaluation of training progress for crew members participating in the established Training System (TS) curriculum.
Responsibilities
The C-17 Pilot Instructor will:
- Deliver comprehensive training utilizing a range of advanced devices, including the Weapon System Trainer (WST), C-17 aircraft, Computer-Based Trainers (CBT), and other ground training resources, encompassing air drop, aerial refueling, transport operating procedures, and addressing student areas requiring further development.
- Maintain an exemplary level of subject matter expertise, instructional proficiency, and currency in all aspects of C-17 operations.
- Conduct thorough pre- and post-flight briefings, providing constructive feedback and personalized guidance to all pilots and Maintenance Engine Run personnel, fostering a culture of continuous learning and operational excellence.
- Oversee administrative tasks related to training, including seamless coordination with user organizations, meticulous record-keeping, monitoring student progression, providing constructive feedback, and actively contributing to the development and enhancement of training programs.
- Proactively contribute to the refinement and modernization of courseware, ensuring training policies and procedures remain current and aligned with industry best practices.
- Maintain instructional proficiency through regular utilization of the WST, ensuring practical skills remain sharp and current.
- Participate in observer flights aboard C-17 aircraft to maintain familiarity with operational procedures and assess student progress in a real-world setting.
- Serve as a C-17 Pilot Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing invaluable guidance to students, colleagues, and during test events, as required.
- Assume the roles of Flight Check Airman (FCA)(Lead), Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Evaluator, and Simulator Certification (SIMCERT)/Simulator Evaluation (SIMVAL) specialist, as assigned.
- Contribute to project development initiatives and provide support to various teams, as needed.
- Actively participate in Operations Group Standardization/Evaluation (Stan/Eval) Boards (SEB), Training Review Panels (TRP), and Formal Training Unit (FTU) instructor meetings, representing the organization with professionalism and expertise.
- Attend Headquarters (HQ) Air Mobility Command (AMC) curriculum reviews, HQ AMC Stan/Eval Conferences, and Flight Manual Review Conferences (FMRC), as required.
- Fulfill the responsibilities of Learning Center monitor, safety representative, physical/cyber security representative, and hazardous materials (HAZMAT) handler, as assigned.
- Undertake travel as required to support training objectives and organizational initiatives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Eight (8) years of flying experience, including five (5) years as a C-17 pilot with demonstrable experience in air drop and aerial refueling operations, or the ability to secure an AMC/A3TK waiver.
- Two (2) years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience in air drop, aerial refueling, and tactical operations.
- Recent C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor experience and CATS MECOC certification are highly desirable.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
- Proficiency with standard office software, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
- Must possess an active SECRET Security Clearance.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
The role demands the ability to communicate effectively, sit, stand, walk, use hands for fine motor skills, reach with arms, stoop, and kneel. Frequent ingress/egress from the simulator and aircraft is required, including exposure to inclement weather and temperature extremes. The ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds regularly and 35 pounds occasionally is necessary. Noise levels can range from quiet to extremely loud. The successful candidate must be able to exit the WST via an escape ladder.
