Flight Instructor - C-17 Aircraft

As a key member of the organization, the Flight Instructor will play a vital role in the comprehensive training of C-17 pilots, ensuring they achieve the highest levels of proficiency in air drop, aerial refueling, and transport operations.
Purpose of Position:
The Flight Instructor is responsible for delivering ground-based training to C-17 pilots, employing established curriculum and utilizing various training devices, including the Weapon System Trainer (WST), C-17 aircraft, Computer-Based Trainers (CBT), and other specialized equipment. The instructor will meticulously evaluate student progress, identify areas for improvement, and provide tailored guidance to optimize performance.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive training sessions utilizing a range of training devices, encompassing air drop, aerial refueling, and transport operating procedures.
- Employ diagnostic and remedial techniques to address student challenges and facilitate learning.
- Maintain a high level of subject matter expertise and instructional skills, continually enhancing proficiency and knowledge.
- Conduct thorough pre- and post-flight briefings and debriefings, providing constructive feedback and counseling to pilots and Maintenance Engine Run personnel to cultivate a culture of continuous improvement.
- Execute administrative duties related to training, including collaboration with user organizations, meticulous record keeping, student progress monitoring, counseling, curriculum development, and program maintenance.
- Contribute to the enhancement of training materials and procedures by providing valuable input for courseware corrections, modifications, and updates.
- Maintain currency on operational procedures and observe student progress through periodic flights as an observer on the C-17 aircraft and by utilizing the WST to maintain instructional expertise.
- Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for C-17 pilots, providing guidance and support to students, other personnel, and test events as required.
- Function as a Flight Check Airman (FCA) (Lead) when assigned by the Employer, ensuring pilot competency and adherence to established standards.
- Serve as a Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Evaluator when assigned by the Employer, evaluating student performance against established criteria.
- Conduct Simulator Certification (SIMCERT)/Simulator Evaluation (SIMVAL) duties when assigned by the Employer, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of simulation systems.
- Assist in project and development work as assigned, contributing to the continuous improvement of training programs and methodologies.
- Participate in Operations Group Standardization/Evaluation (Stan/Eval) Boards (SEB) and Training Review Panels (TRP), as well as Formal Training Unit (FTU) instructor meetings (when FCA is unavailable).
- Attend Headquarters (HQ) Air Mobility Command (AMC) curriculum reviews, HQ AMC Stan/Eval Conferences, and/or Flight Manual Review Conferences (FMRC), as required (when FCA is unavailable).
- Fulfill Learning Center monitor duties as assigned, overseeing the operation and maintenance of training facilities.
- Assume safety representative duties as designated/assigned, promoting a safe and secure training environment.
- Undertake physical/cyber security representative duties as assigned, upholding security protocols and mitigating risks.
- Execute hazardous materials (HAZMAT) duties as designated/assigned, ensuring the safe handling and transportation of hazardous materials.
- Travel as required to fulfill training commitments and attend conferences or workshops.
- Perform other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of the training program.
Minimum Education:
A Bachelor's degree is required for this position, demonstrating a strong foundation in education and a commitment to professional development.
Minimum Experience:
- Eight (8) years of flying experience is required, with a minimum of five (5) years as a C-17 pilot possessing air drop and aerial refueling experience, or the ability to obtain an AMC/A3TK waiver.
- Two (2) years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience in air drop, aerial refueling, and tactics is essential, showcasing proven expertise in flight instruction and student development.
- Recent C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor experience and CATS MECOC certification are highly desirable, indicating up-to-date knowledge and skills in simulation-based training.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate information and respond to inquiries from students and stakeholders.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, enabling clear and concise delivery of training materials and effective interaction with trainees.
- A thorough understanding of instructional principles and theories pertaining to training systems, demonstrating a commitment to evidence-based teaching practices.
- Familiarity with personal computers and software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases, facilitating efficient record keeping and curriculum development.
- Successful completion of annual internal standardization evaluations, showcasing continued professional development and adherence to established standards.
- An active SECRET Security Clearance is mandatory, ensuring the ability to handle classified information.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The Flight Instructor will be regularly required to communicate verbally, sit, stand, walk, and utilize hands to manipulate objects and controls. The position may require occasional reaching, stooping, and kneeling. The Flight Instructor will frequently need to enter and exit the simulator and aircraft, work in various weather conditions, and adapt to temperature extremes. The position requires the ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 35 pounds. The noise level will range from quiet to extremely loud. The Flight Instructor must be capable of exiting the WST via an escape ladder.
