Pilot Instructor – C-17 Aircraft

Purpose of the Position:
The Pilot Instructor will deliver comprehensive ground-based training to C-17 pilots, encompassing instruction and performance assessment within the established Training System (TS) curriculum.
Responsibilities and Tasks:
- Conduct training utilizing diverse resources, including the Weapon System Trainer (WST), C-17 aircraft, Computer-Based Trainers (CBTs), and other ground-based training aids. Instruction will cover airdrop, aerial refueling/transport operating procedures, encompassing student performance diagnosis and remedial instruction.
- Maintain a superior level of subject matter expertise, instructional competence, and proficiency.
- Conduct effective pilot briefings and debriefings, providing constructive counsel to foster and maintain high levels of proficiency for pilots and Maintenance Engine Run personnel.
- Manage training-related administrative tasks, including interfacing with the user organization, meticulous record keeping, student progress monitoring, counseling, training development, and program maintenance.
- Contribute to courseware refinement and modification, proactively updating training policies and procedures.
- Maintain instructional expertise through periodic WST flights (as required).
- Observe student progress and maintain operational procedure currency through occasional observer flights on the C-17 aircraft (as required).
- Serve as a C-17 Pilot Subject Matter Expert (SME) for students, personnel, and test events, as needed.
- Function as Flight Check Airman (FCA) (Lead), as assigned.
- Serve as a Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Evaluator, as assigned.
- Conduct Simulator Certification (SIMCERT)/Simulator Evaluation (SIMVAL) duties, as assigned.
- Participate in project and development work, as assigned.
- Attend Operations Group Standardization/Evaluation (Stan/Eval) Boards (SEB) and Training Review Panels (TRP), as well as Formal Training Unit (FTU) instructor meetings (when FCA is unavailable).
- Participate in Headquarters (HQ) Air Mobility Command (AMC) curriculum reviews, HQ AMC Stan/Eval Conferences, and/or Flight Manual Review Conferences (FMRC), as required (when FCA is unavailable).
- Fulfill Learning Center monitor duties, as assigned.
- Perform safety representative duties, as designated/assigned.
- Perform physical/cyber security representative duties, as assigned.
- Perform hazardous materials (HAZMAT) duties, as designated/assigned.
- Travel as required.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Eight (8) years of flying experience, including five (5) years as a C-17 pilot with airdrop and aerial refueling experience, or eligibility for an AMC/A3TK waiver.
- Two (2) years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience in airdrop, aerial refueling, and tactics.
- Recent C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor experience and CATS MECOC certification are highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Exceptional presentation skills and ability to effectively address audience questions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Comprehensive understanding of instructional principles and theories applicable to Training Systems (TS).
- Proficiency in personal computer and software applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases).
- Successful completion of annual internal standardization evaluations.
- Active SECRET Security Clearance.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The position requires regular sitting, standing, walking, and use of hands and arms. Occasional stooping or kneeling may be required. Frequent ingress/egress from simulators and aircraft, exposure to varying weather conditions and temperature extremes, and lifting up to 25 pounds (frequently) and 35 pounds (occasionally) are expected. Noise levels vary significantly. Ability to utilize escape ladders for egress from the WST is required.
