Purpose of Position
The C-17 Pilot Instructor is a pivotal role within FlightSafety International, responsible for delivering exceptional ground-based training to C-17 pilots. This includes expert instruction and meticulous monitoring of crewmember progress throughout the established Training System (TS) curriculum.
Tasks and Responsibilities
The C-17 Pilot Instructor will:
- Conduct engaging and effective training using advanced devices such as the Weapon System Trainer (WST), the C-17 aircraft, Computer-Based Trainers (CBT), and other ground training platforms.
- Expertly instruct C-17 TS pilots in all aspects of air drop, aerial refueling, and transport operating procedures.
- Demonstrate a deep understanding of pilot training, including the ability to diagnose and remediate student challenges effectively.
- Maintain superior subject matter knowledge, continuously honing instructional skills and expertise.
- Lead insightful briefings and debriefings, providing constructive feedback and guidance to all pilots and Maintenance Engine Run personnel to foster a culture of continuous improvement and high proficiency.
- Manage administrative tasks related to training, including liaising with user organizations, maintaining meticulous records, tracking student progress, providing mentorship and counseling, and contributing to the development and maintenance of robust training programs.
- Proactively contribute to courseware refinements, modifications, and the continuous improvement of training policies and procedures.
- Maintain instructional proficiency through regular flights on the WST.
- Stay current on operational procedures and observe student advancement by participating in observational flights on the C-17 aircraft.
- Serve as a trusted C-17 Pilot Subject Matter Expert (SME), offering invaluable insights and guidance to students, colleagues, and during test events.
- Assume the responsibilities of Flight Check Airman (FCA) (Lead), Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Evaluator, and conduct Simulator Certification (SIMCERT)/Simulator Evaluation (SIMVAL) duties as assigned.
- Actively participate in project and development initiatives, contributing to the ongoing enhancement of training programs.
- Engage in Operations Group Standardization/Evaluation (Stan/Eval) Boards (SEB) and Training Review Panels (TRP), as well as Formal Training Unit (FTU) instructor meetings, as required.
- Contribute to Headquarters (HQ) Air Mobility Command (AMC) curriculum reviews, HQ AMC Stan/Eval Conferences, and Flight Manual Review Conferences (FMRC), as needed.
- Perform Learning Center monitoring duties, ensuring the smooth operation and effectiveness of training facilities.
- Act as a safety representative, championing a culture of safety and compliance with all safety protocols.
- Fulfill physical/cyber security representative duties, safeguarding sensitive information and maintaining a secure training environment.
- Manage hazardous materials (HAZMAT), adhering to all relevant regulations and best practices.
- Undertake travel as required to meet operational needs.
- Perform additional duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to supporting the team.
Minimum Education
Bachelor's degree is required.
Minimum Experience
- A minimum of eight (8) years of flying experience is required, including five (5) years as a C-17 pilot with proven air drop and aerial refueling experience. Candidates may be eligible for an AMC/A3TK waiver.
- A minimum of two (2) years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience, encompassing air drop, aerial refueling, and tactics, is mandatory.
- Recent experience as a C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor and CATS MECOC certification are highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate information and effectively address inquiries.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills are crucial.
- A strong understanding of instructional principles and theories pertaining to Training Systems is essential.
- Proficiency in using personal computers and software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases, is required.
- The ability to successfully complete annual internal standardization evaluations is mandatory.
- Possession of an active SECRET Security Clearance is required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
This role requires the ability to:
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and auditorily.
- Sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
- Use hands for fine motor skills, such as typing and handling equipment.
- Reach with hands and arms.
- Stoop or kneel occasionally.
- Frequently enter and exit the simulator and aircraft.
- Work in inclement weather conditions and temperature extremes, as outlined in Air Force and company guidelines.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds.
- Tolerate noise levels ranging from quiet to extremely loud.
- Safely exit the WST using an escape ladder.
