Purpose of the Position

The Flight Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality ground-based training to C-17 pilots. This role involves instructing and evaluating crewmembers' progress within the established Training System (TS) curriculum, ensuring proficiency in all aspects of C-17 operation.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Conduct comprehensive training utilizing various devices, including the Weapon System Trainer (WST), the C-17 aircraft, Computer-Based Trainers (CBTs), and other ground-based resources. Instruction will encompass airdrop procedures, aerial refueling/transport operations, and effective troubleshooting of student performance issues.
  • Maintain current expertise in C-17 operational procedures, instructional techniques, and relevant subject matter.
  • Deliver effective briefings and debriefings, providing constructive feedback and guidance to enhance pilot performance.
  • Manage administrative tasks associated with training, such as interfacing with the client organization, maintaining accurate records, monitoring student progress, and contributing to curriculum development and maintenance.
  • Proactively contribute to courseware improvements and updates to training policies and procedures.
  • Maintain proficiency through WST and in-flight observation (as required) and act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for students and other personnel.
  • Serve as Flight Check Airman (FCA) (Lead) and Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Evaluator (as assigned).
  • Perform Simulator Certification (SIMCERT)/Simulator Evaluation (SIMVAL) duties (as assigned).
  • Participate in project development work and attend Operations Group Standardization/Evaluation (Stan/Eval) Boards (SEB), Training Review Panels (TRP), and instructor meetings.
  • Represent the organization at Headquarters (HQ) Air Mobility Command (AMC) curriculum reviews, Stan/Eval Conferences, and Flight Manual Review Conferences (FMRC) (as assigned).
  • Perform Learning Center monitor, safety representative, physical/cyber security representative, and hazardous materials (HAZMAT) duties (as assigned).
  • Travel as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Eight (8) years of flying experience, with five (5) years as a C-17 pilot possessing airdrop and aerial refueling experience (or a waiver from AMC/A3TK).
  • Two (2) years or 200 hours of flight instructor experience in airdrop, aerial refueling, and tactics.
  • Recent C-17 flight simulator pilot instructor experience and CATS MECOC certification are highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking, and understanding).
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to effectively present information and answer questions.
  • Strong understanding of instructional principles and theories related to training systems.
  • Proficient in using personal computers and standard software applications (word processing, spreadsheets, and databases).
  • Ability to consistently meet internal standardization evaluation requirements.
  • Active SECRET Security Clearance.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The role requires sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and lifting up to 25 pounds regularly (occasionally up to 35 pounds). The work environment includes exposure to varying noise levels, inclement weather, and temperature extremes, and requires the ability to safely enter and exit aircraft and simulators. The ability to ascend and descend a ladder is also required.
