Job Summary

The College of Liberal Arts' School of Aviation is seeking a Chief Flight Instructor to oversee and guide Part 141 certificated flight courses within the Professional Flight degree program. This leadership role is responsible for shaping aviation training at Auburn by leading instruction, ensuring compliance, and supporting excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the FAA-approved Chief Flight Instructor in accordance with 14 CFR Part 141 for the AUAC Professional Flight department and pilot for the FAA-approved Part 141 pilot school.
  • Oversee and manage activities of assigned pilot training staff and flight instructors, including operational safety, training standardization and quality, initial and recurrent proficiency training.
  • Supervise the pilot training of all students participating in the aviation program.
  • Direct the administration of pilot school documentation and academic records in accordance with FAA, VA, and Auburn University policy.
  • Maintain a safety culture by assuring adherence to safety standards and coordinating with airport management on safety and operational issues.
  • Forecast, direct, and approve equipment acquisition to meet pilot training needs.
  • Direct and approve curriculum development and program strategies in collaboration with faculty and instructors.
  • Manage and administer the department budget, including preparation, approval, and monitoring of expenditures.
  • Prioritize the allocation of resources, personnel, and equipment for the safe, efficient, and effective conduct of all assigned academic courses.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (no specific field required).
  • Must meet applicable requirements outlined in FAA 14 CFR, Part 141.35:
    • At least 2,000 hours as pilot in command.
    • Flight training experience acquired as a certificated flight instructor or an instructor in a military pilot flight training program (or a combination thereof) consisting of at least 3 years and a total of 1,000 flight hours; or 1,500 flight hours.
  • Must hold at least an FAA Commercial Pilot certificate with airplane single and multi-engine land, and instrument-airplane ratings (within 60 days of hire).
  • Must hold an FAA Flight Instructor certificate with airplane single and multi-engine, and instrument-airplane ratings (within 60 days of hire).
  • Must meet FAA regulatory requirements in accordance with 14 CFR Part 141.35 for designation as Chief Flight Instructor for AU's FAA approved Part 141 Pilot School (within 60 days of hire).

Desired Qualifications

  • Degree in Aviation, Aviation Management, Business Management, Finance, or a related field.
