Aviation Mechanic (F/A-18 Plane Captain)
Job Overview
Amentum is seeking qualified candidates for the role of F/A-18 Plane Captain to support U.S. Navy Aircraft maintenance operations at NAS Oceana, VA. This position requires the ability to work rotating shifts and travel for detachments, including aboard U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. The successful candidate will become Plane Captain certified through a government-approved process and will perform aircraft servicing and maintenance tasks.
Responsibilities
- Direct incoming and outgoing aircraft on the flight line, assisting pilots with maneuvering using hand or light signals.
- Secure aircraft in parking positions using chocks and tie-downs.
- Perform aircraft flight line servicing, including replenishing fuel and oil using service vehicles.
- Conduct pre-flight through post-flight maintenance inspections.
- Document servicing performed in maintenance records.
- Check for fuel contamination by draining sumps and fuel drains.
- Operate ground support equipment, including electrical power supply, tow tractors, and engine starting units.
- Examine tires for specified air pressure and condition.
- Assist in towing aircraft.
- Clean the exterior and interior of aircraft and hanger decks, including housekeeping and fluid spill cleanup using appropriate equipment.
- Perform work up to 7 days a week, 40 hours per week, with potential for overtime based on operational tempo.
Minimum Requirements
- Ability to work rotating shifts and travel for detachments, including aboard U.S. Navy aircraft carriers.
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Minimum two (2) years of actual and recent organizational level aircraft maintenance experience is desired.
- A valid Virginia or North Carolina Driver license (if a North Carolina resident).
- Mandatory knowledge and use of special tools/equipment required for assigned maintenance tasks.
- Work performed primarily outdoors under various weather conditions, with exposure to loud noise and exhaust fumes.
- Ability to read and interpret technical publications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Must be a self-motivator and capable of working with minimum supervision.
- Must meet physical requirements and pass any medical examination requirements for assigned tasks, including standing, climbing, bending, and stooping.
- Must obtain approved status from the Contractor Verification system, including a 7-year background check and a Public Trust Security Clearance.
- Must obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
Preferred Qualifications
- F/A-18 Plane Captain, Brake Rider, Move Director experience.
- Completion of military aviation maintenance training or maintenance technical school curriculum, or possession of an FAA issued A&P license.
- Prior experience with U.S. Navy aviation on F/A-18 aircraft.
Compensation and Benefits
Hourly rate: $35.36. This is a good-faith estimate; actual compensation may vary based on job responsibilities, education, experience, skills, market data, and other factors.
