Aviation Pilot / Flight Program Operations

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently seeking qualified pilots to join the Flight Program Operations team. As a part 135 certificate holder with a diverse national and global mission, the FAA maintains the safety and integrity of the national airspace system. Pilots in this role support critical missions, including the inspection of navigational aids, commissioning of new airport equipment, research and development of avionics, and transportation for critical event response.

Key Responsibilities

The selected pilot will operate aircraft to support the FAA’s multifaceted mission requirements. Duties include executing flight test procedures, conducting research and evaluation missions with advanced avionics, and performing inspections in all weather conditions to support both the aviation industry and government agencies.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  • Certificates and Ratings: Applicants must possess a valid Commercial pilot certificate with airplane, multi-engine land, and instrument ratings, OR an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate with a multi-engine land rating. Candidates without an ATP certificate must successfully complete the ATP written exam within 60 days of appointment.
  • Medical Certificate: Applicants must possess a valid first or second-class medical certificate. A first-class medical certificate is required prior to appointment.
  • Total Flight Time: 1500 hours (Pilot in command or copilot time in any weight or category is creditable).
  • Pilot-in-Command (PIC) Time: 250 hours.
  • Multiengine Airplane Time: 500 hours.
  • Instrument Time: 75 hours (minimum of 10 hours in actual instrument weather; balance may be simulator or hood time).
  • Night Flying Time: 75 hours.
  • Recent Flight Experience: 100 hours within the last 12 months.
  • Selective Placement Factor: To qualify for the FV-J (FG-14) level, applicants must possess an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate AND an Airspace Inspection Pilot (ASIP) Credential.

Conditions of Employment

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Designated or random drug testing is required.
  • Successful completion of a security investigation may be required.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Candidates may be required to file a financial disclosure statement.

Eligible candidates will be evaluated based on the application package and FAA Form 3330-47-3. Applicants must document flight hours using this form. Narratives for Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) are not required; however, applicants must include specific examples within their work history that demonstrate their expertise relative to the KSA requirements.
