Aviation Pilot / Flight Program Operations

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently seeking qualified pilots to join the Flight Program Operations team. As a part 135 certificate holder with a national and global presence, the FAA maintains the safety and integrity of the national airspace system through diverse missions, including navigational aid inspections, equipment commissioning, flight test procedures, research and development, and critical event response.

Position Duties

Selected candidates will support a unique government organization by performing essential flight missions that ensure national and economic continuity. Responsibilities include operating aircraft across varying weather conditions, supporting military and government agency missions, and contributing to the training of FAA pilots and inspectors. Operations are based in locations including Arlington, VA; Kennesaw, GA; Atlantic City, NJ; Battle Creek, MI; Oklahoma City, OK; Fort Worth, TX; Sacramento, CA; and Anchorage, AK.

Conditions of Employment

  • US Citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Successful completion of a security investigation may be required.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Designated or random drug testing is required under the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
  • The selected candidate may be required to file a financial disclosure statement within 30 days of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

Eligible candidates will be evaluated based on the application package and FAA Form 3330-47-3 (ASIP). All applicants must meet the following baseline requirements:

  • Certificates and Ratings: Valid Commercial pilot certificate with airplane, multi-engine land, and instrument ratings, OR an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate with multi-engine land rating. Candidates without an ATP must complete the ATP written exam within 60 days of appointment.
  • Medical Certificate: Valid first or second-class medical certificate required. Selected candidates must obtain a first-class medical certificate prior to appointment.
  • Total Flight Time: 1500 hours.
  • Pilot-in-Command Time: 250 hours.
  • Multiengine Airplane Time: 500 hours.
  • Night Flying Time: 75 hours.
  • Instrument Time: 75 hours (minimum of 10 hours must be in actual instrument weather).
  • Recent Flight Experience: 100 hours within the last 12 months.

Selective Placement Factor: To qualify at the FV-J (FG-14) level, applicants must possess an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (ATP) and an Airspace Inspection Pilot (ASIP) Credential.

Additional Information

Positions may be filled at the FV-I or FV-J levels. Promotion potential to the FV-J exists for positions filled at the FV-I level, subject to qualification and training requirements. This position is covered under the FAA Core Compensation plan, and special rate pay may apply in accordance with OPM Special Rate Tables. Permanent Change of Station (PCS) benefits may be provided if eligible.
