Position Overview: FAA Pilot / Aviation Inspector

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is seeking qualified candidates for the 2181 aviation series. This role supports a critical government organization tasked with maintaining the safety and integrity of the national airspace system. FAA pilots conduct routine inspections of navigational aids, commission new airport equipment globally, and support research, development, and flight-testing of cutting-edge avionics. Additionally, personnel manage transportation and critical event response missions to support government agencies and the public.

This position operates under Part 135 certification with multiple duty locations, including Arlington, VA; Kennesaw, GA; Atlantic City, NJ; Battle Creek, MI; Oklahoma City, OK; Fort Worth, TX; Sacramento, CA; and Anchorage, AK.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • Subject to designated or random drug testing.
  • Subject to a security investigation and a one-year probationary period.
  • May be required to file a financial disclosure statement.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following flight hour and certification requirements:

  • Certificates: Valid Commercial Pilot Certificate (with airplane, multi-engine land, and instrument ratings) OR an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate (with multi-engine land rating). Applicants without an ATP must pass the ATP written exam within 60 days of appointment.
  • Medical: Valid first or second-class medical certificate (First class required prior to appointment).
  • Total Flight Time: 1500 hours.
  • Pilot-in-Command Time: 250 hours.
  • Night Flying Time: 75 hours.
  • Flight Time (Last 12 Months): 100 hours (FAA-approved level C or D simulators may be credited).
  • Multi-engine Airplane Time: 500 hours.
  • Instrument Time: 75 hours (minimum 10 hours must be actual instrument weather).

Selective Placement Factor: To qualify at the FV-J (FG-14) level, candidates must possess an ATP certificate and an Airspace Inspection Pilot (ASIP) credential.

Additional Information

This position is covered by the FAA Core Compensation plan. Positions may be filled at the FV-I or FV-J levels, with promotion potential for those hired at the FV-I level.
