Aviation Pilot – FAA Flight Program Operations

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently seeking qualified pilots for its Flight Program Operations team. As a part 135 certificate holder with a national and global presence, the FAA maintains the safety and integrity of the national airspace system through diverse missions, including navigational aid inspections, equipment commissioning, flight research, and critical event response.

Position Summary

This is a direct hiring opportunity utilizing a Public Notice for the 2181 series. This announcement serves as a resume repository; please note that positions may or may not be filled as a result of this announcement. Successful candidates will join a dedicated organization supporting national aviation safety and government transportation initiatives. Operational locations include Arlington, VA; Kennesaw, GA; Atlantic City, NJ; Battle Creek, MI; Oklahoma City, OK; Fort Worth, TX; Sacramento, CA; and Anchorage, AK.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

Candidates must possess the appropriate FAA pilot certificates and ratings, meet specific flight hour benchmarks, and demonstrate the required knowledge and skills for the position.

Certificates and Ratings

  • Valid Commercial Pilot Certificate with airplane, multi-engine land, and instrument ratings, OR an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate with multi-engine land rating.
  • Valid first or second-class medical certificate. (Note: Selected candidates must obtain a first-class medical certificate prior to appointment).
  • Candidates without an ATP certificate will be required to successfully complete the ATP written exam within 60 days of appointment.
  • To qualify at the FV-J (FG-14) level, applicants must possess an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (ATP) AND an Airspace Inspection Pilot (ASIP) Credential.

Flight Hour Requirements

  • Total Flight Time: 1,500 hours.
  • Pilot-in-Command Time: 250 hours.
  • Multi-engine Airplane Time: 500 hours (light or heavy aircraft).
  • Night Flying Time: 75 hours.
  • Instrument Time: 75 hours (minimum of 10 hours must be in actual instrument weather).
  • Flight Time (Last 12 Months): 100 hours.

Conditions of Employment

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Designated or random drug testing is required.
  • Successful completion of a security investigation may be required.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Candidates may be required to file a financial disclosure statement.

Applicants are not required to provide narrative responses for Knowledge, Skills, and Ability (KSA) prompts; instead, candidates must include detailed examples within their work history that demonstrate their proficiency and experience relevant to the position requirements. Qualifications must be met by the closing date of the vacancy announcement.

Additional Information

This position is covered by the FAA Core Compensation plan and the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Program. Permanent Change of Station (PCS) benefits may be available for eligible candidates.
