Aviation Captains are entrusted with the safety and security of all crew members, passengers, and cargo on board the aircraft. They bear ultimate responsibility for the operation and safety of the aircraft from the initial taxiing phase prior to take-off until the aircraft comes to a complete stop at the conclusion of the flight and the engines are shut down.
The Captain is expected to familiarize themselves with all applicable regulations, documentation, and briefing materials pertaining to the intended route of flight, destination, and alternate airfields. Furthermore, the Captain is expected to be fully conversant with oxygen escape routes and terrain escape routes.
The Captain holds the authority to issue all commands deemed necessary to ensure the safety of the aircraft and all persons or property carried within. The Captain also possesses the authority to disembark any person, or remove any part of the cargo, that, in their professional opinion, may pose a potential hazard to the safety of the aircraft or its occupants.
It is imperative that the Captain ensures that all crew members adhere to all operational checklists before, during, and after all phases of flight operations, including abnormal and emergency situations. He or she will ensure the proper implementation and application of manufacturer-provided procedures and checklists as approved for use.
In emergency situations demanding immediate decision and action, the Captain, or the pilot to whom conduct of the flight has been delegated, shall take any action they deem necessary under the prevailing circumstances. In such instances, deviation from standard rules, operational procedures, and methods is permissible in the interest of safety.
The Captain is responsible for operating the aircraft within the scope of all Operational Manuals, and for taking all reasonable measures to ensure that all persons on board the aircraft obey all lawful commands issued for the purpose of securing the safety of the aircraft and of persons or property carried therein. Efficient operation in accordance with company fuel policy, ensuring on-time performance, and prioritizing customer awareness are also key responsibilities.
